75 grain hornady 223 varget loads

Re: 75 grain hornady 223 varget loads

I'm using this load until I AI my .223:

75gr HDY BTHP
24.7gr Varget
Federal brass
CCI 400
2.260" COAL
Does 2824 fps from 20" 1x9" twist factory remington sps tactical. I shot this load this past weekend out to 1040yds with no problems except judging wind. I walked onto targets with spotter corrections.

Re: 75 grain hornady 223 varget loads

Well I went out last night and shot several varget loads ranging from 23 up to 25 grains in .5 grain increments.this was using properly prepped us gi brass , cci 400 primers and the bullets seated to 2.270 coal. I was shooting them out of a rock river 1:8 20 inch hb ar.
so far the winner seems to be 24.5 grains but the bset I pulled off was one MOA.
I am going to go back and try 24.3, 24.6, and 24.9 again and push the coal back to 2.260 the 2.270 was on the edge of giving me some magazine problems.

Anyone use the sierras 77's in a direct comparison against the hornady 75's

Re: 75 grain hornady 223 varget loads

DAFAR,

I've developed a load in a similar rifle (Rock River 20", 1-8 twist varmint rifle). I've been using LC brass, Varget, Win SR primers, and have tried Sierra 77gr, Nosler 77gr, and Hornady 75gr bullets.

The Hornady's and Nosler's were about a tie in the accuracy department, with the Sierra's falling WAY behind.

My most accurate charge weight was 24.5gr of Varget, but be forewarned this was about as hot as I'd run them. At 25.0gr Varget I was backing out primers. This load is running between 1/2 to 3/4 MOA. My velocity is 2675fps. Seating depth 2.255".
