What is the difference between a Remington model 700 and a model 783?

would a model 783 make a good starting point for a long range precision build?

Pretty much everything (action footprint, action design, bolt design, barrel nut vs. shouldered, trigger, etc.)...and no, in my opinion it would not.

They are a very strong and solid action but the current problem with the 783 is the lack of after market parts.

I built this one a few months ago and used a PDC custom stock and had Ken Farrell make a scope base for it.

The action?

If so then no the 783 doesn't look like a 700, honestly it's closer to a savage target action than a 700.

Also am wondering about the differences between the 700 and the 783 action as far as stock inlet etc. in other words what modifications to the inlet for 700, to fit the 783? How hard was it to fit this action in the chassis?

Well As far as I can tell there really is no mod that can be done besides a complete re-inlet. Action hole spacing is different, mag well is different.

PTG is suppose to be making a DBM for them and even replacement bolts but I haven't seen any of them yet. So I contacted Craig over at PDC custom to see if he would be willing to make a stock for me. He did and the end result is what you see above. I believe he has a extra one on hand that he machined at the same time.

Like others have said, aftermarket items for the 783 model are pretty much nonexistent. If you have a ton of extra money then just do yourself a favor and buy a nice custom rifle.

I on the other hand don't have a ton of extra money and have never really shot past 100 yards. A few months ago while in Walmart I noticed a 783 in .308 listed for $297. I didn't have a bolt and I figured for the price it wouldn't be a terrible gun to learn with. I added some Remington rings, a Weaver Grand Slam scope and a harris bipod. Total invested, less than $700. I reload so I picked up some 308 components and have enjoyed shooting the rifle. I now belong to a range that gives me the opportunity to shoot up to 1250 yards. Right now since I am new to the bolt gun and 308 for that matter I'm sticking to under 500 yards. Down the road I'll purchase a nice custom rifle and transition to the longer distances.

Started from a clean slate as far as I know.

Give PDC a call and talk to Craig about the stock and what it took to make it.
