I need a little advice on my 7WSM. I'm running 162's over 65gr of RL22 with a fed210m. I'm getting an average velocity of 3030, and a standard deviation of 6fps. I keep reading about guys running them 3150, and I'd like a little more speed. I'm showing pressure signs at 66gr of RL22. I've got some H1000 and some 4831SC. I'm thinking about trying one of them with a magnum primer. Does anyone have any advice on which should work better?

You may be able to go faster but with an SD of 6 FPS I am not sure I would change much.
That is remarkable!

Re: 7WSM input

I don't think that you are going to get that high of a velocity in a short action, too much of the case capacity is taken up with the deep seated bullet.

Currently I am running 168gr Berger VLD's over 61.5 gr of RL-22 at 2823 fps average with a 5.7 fps SD. It is an extremely efficient cartridge. I kept the load mild to try to extend barrel life and not run into any problems when shooting in high temperatures.

Re: 7WSM input

If you run from a short action, but single feed and set up your chamber to long throat and seat the bullet way out, you can maximize case capacity in the WSM case. I do in one of my 7WSMs, it has an OAL with the Berger 180 of over 3.1".

If you set up to magazine feed with AI mags or internal magazine, you can still run the SIerra 175s to 2,900 fps, but you do push that bullet back into the case and eat up case capacity that way.

Re: 7WSM input

Shooter, not saying your the dumbest 7wsm owner but yes the long action works great. People are moving to the long action because they want to utilize the long and very good BC 7mm bullets. They will also be able to mag feed from the long action without any problems. Good luck with your short action though. If you decide to move to a long action let everyone know why and how you did it. Re: 7WSM input

Shooter308- You may want to check the fucking attitude! That was a very legitimate question, there are people that run the WSM's in L/A just to be able to run the longer bullets with a heavier charge all while being able to reach the lands.

100% correct and apparently he's not man enough to come back on this thread and apologize for being a fuckwit.

Guess we will wait and see.

Re: 7WSM input

I may be stupid too but why do you want to run your Wizzum so hard? 62.0 H4831SC under Berger 180VLD runs to 1000yds all day. and hopefully longer barrel life. Just my .02 sorry for butting in.

Re: 7WSM input

Not to Steal this thread, but

what Spec Actions are you running to use a long action with a 7WSM?

I want to build one just havent researched the long action yet.
and I'm all for seating the bullet long and still having room in the mag to chase the lands.

I'm thinking 7SAUM instead of 7WSM a little bit longer neck and seems like brass is more readily avalable.

Thanks

Re: 7WSM input

Why not just build a 7mm mag? Does the belt result in less accuracy?

It seems pointless to me to build a long action WSM when you can just use the full length cartridge, unless there is some underlying reason why 7mm mag won't work.

I'm sure there are some longer 7mm unbelted cartridges that might work as well.

Seems like 7WSM would have too many tradeoffs to be ideal in a long action. Why not 7mm STW or 7mm RUM?

On paper, few cartridges boast the performance of 7mm, but you might as well make the best of it.

Re: 7WSM input

Belted cartrigdes are less desirable because the are head spaced from the the rim of the case/bolt face to the farward side of the belt which could leave space up at the shoulder and could lead to inaccurate ammo. This really only comes into play with factory ammo or newly reloaded cases. If you once fired the case it will be perfectly fit to the camber.

cheyenne19, if your load stated above groups well, 3030 is a great velocity. Its hard to beat about 1300ft-lbs of energy at grand plus save some barrel life.

7WSM has a lot of trade-offs to be in a short action. If I were to build another 7WSM I'd use a long action.
