Any of you hunt with an old fashioned long bow?

I've been considering one for a while now, a year or two.

After seeing the book of Eli my interest got peaked again (I realize that was hollywood).

I shot better on a long bow than a compound bow, but are they up to snuff for an elk?

Couple years ago I tore my shoulder pulling back 74lbs on a nice custom bow - had to sell it.

Re: a good long-bow?

Deffinately enough for elk. Just be close and you will likely be using a much heavier arrow than normaly seen with a compound. Herb Meland at Pronghorn Archery makes a very nice bow.

Re: a good long-bow?

I realize the attraction but have you considered a compound? they are much more advanced now than even a few years ago. Even at Entry level.

Also, it never hurts to get lessons. There is so much in bow shooting that one would never think about.

With compounds, you can back the weight off for extended practice. At least you can on mine. I'd look for a model with that ability.

Shoot ARP a PM, he is a sponsored archery shooter prostaff kinda guy.

Re: a good long-bow?

There plenty for ANY north America game. I personally like caribow and blackwidow long bows but whatever there all good if they fit you.

Re: a good long-bow?

Well with hte lay off coming this will have to be a trade deal.

I don't need a super out-priced one but would love to get a moderate one.

I've shot longbow before, did quite well with it.

Compounds - yeah - believe it or not despite having a super expensive bow - the BEAR 55lb was my favorite -

Shoulder can only go about 65 max, I blew out on a 74-90 lb that was set about 80.

Re: a good long-bow?

Arctic Light - I'm still shooting my 53# Hoyt recurve from the 1970's and aluminum arrows it does just fine - although obviously at nowhere near the speed of the modern compounds. Those things are blisteringly fast!

Thought about getting a longbow myself. I like them, but I don't even shoot the old bow I've got enough. Maybe if I start shooting more again...

Re: a good long-bow?

A few weeks ago i bought a Mathews MXZ bow single cam for 150. Then had it fitted to me that cost about 100 carbon arrows were 60 of that 100. this bow is fast. I bought mine off of craigs list.

Re: a good long-bow?

I shoot a bob lee recurve, and I absolutely love it. I have not shot one of their stick bows, but have heard good of them. I hope to purchase one of his stick bows, but I want his new dark archer recurve first.

Re: a good long-bow?

The archerytalk thread that cavscout posted gives you a good description of the difference. For a visual reference:

Either way enough for elk.

Re: a good long-bow?

ive had one for a couple of years, shot it countless times, and IMO it would do great on just about anything aside from bears and such...now, ill never use mine for hunting...not too many critters will let me shoot them from 2 yards away, which is about my max effective range with it..

Re: a good long-bow?

There's nothing better than shooting a longbow you made yourself imo. I've scratched out a couple over the years ,the last being a hickory stave backed with cherry, its beautiful. Make your own, you wont be disappointed. You can get it done with a minimum of tools as well. For my first one the only tools I used were a draw knife, rat tail file and sand paper, literally that's it.

Re: a good long-bow?

Well guys I bought a Jerry Hill (Howard Hill's nephew) from xRing and am quite impressed - what a GORGEOUS bow.

I need to get some targets set up and get shooting.

I am definitely lookin forward to this!!
