Today we went to the Magnum range in Sanger, Texas. First, no suppressors. Owner's wife said that "suppressors are illegal in Texas even with a stamp." Yeah, whatever. No full auto, no shotguns, no tracers. Charge was $15 to shoot. Appeared to be room for maybe two pistol shooters. Went to the rifle range, where there was room for maybe 10 shooters at some tables. Bring your own targets, staples, any other supplies you need.

No range officer during the week. Which actually would have been nice to have as some redneck bubba brought his Marlin lever action to the line while the rest of us were downrange. When we all got back, bubba announced that he didnt know how to zero his rifle, which looked like he just pulled it out of his favorite storage place, a swamp.

Now the good part - downrange are a series of dirt piles and loads of smashed/shot up shipping pallets which the shooter can construct into some sort of makeshift target stand, as the range doesn't provide any target stands. The 10mph or so wind that was blowing today pretty much deconstructed anything we piled together to hang a target on.

Conclusion: Between the bubba factor, no RO, high cost, and no target stands, I would not recommend the Magnum range.

Re: A place in North Texas NOT to shoot

I have been there. It was only 10 bucks. Normally when I go (fridays) it's empty and I can do whatever I want. However, since Top Gun Shooting Club has opened up I will be going there. Also, Top Gun allows suppressors, I don't know about full auto. Top Gun is 15 bucks for all day and goes out to 500 yards with steel targets.

Here's a link for Top Gun:

Re: A place in North Texas NOT to shoot

I've shot there quite a bit and it was 10 bucks I think.

Bring a screw gun and make your own target stand in 15 seconds. The 200 yard stand always seems to be just fine.

Most places I've been require you to bring your own targets and staples.

Its usually pretty good during the week as usually very few people are there. The weekends are kinda crappy and busy.

Up until recently its the only place around thats allowed prone shooting and a 200 yard range.

Also they have machine gun shoots there once a month from what I'm told.

Re: A place in North Texas NOT to shoot

The owner's wife said that her husband was a long-time Denton County Deputy Sheriff and that it was his policy to not allow silencers on the range because they are illegal in Texas even with a stamp. Guess he doesn't work that much with the Texas Penal Code.

If its your range, you get to decide what is allowed and what isn't, but thats jacked up ot misquote law. Besides, are they afraid its going to be too quiet on the range?

Re: A place in North Texas NOT to shoot

lol, it's a big hole to shoot into if you bring your own equipment. I haven't been there in years. At the time you could shoot whatever you wanted including full-auto. Brian lives like 5 miles from there which is the only reason why I ever went.

Re: A place in North Texas NOT to shoot

I know both Gail and Lou, and I bet because some idiot showed up with an illegal supressor Lou made the change, just like another idiot cut trees down with his M16 a couple years ago and now no full auto, Lou knows that our Sherrif signs for toys, and that cans are not illegal as long as the tax is paid, I don't shoot there much anymore because I joined NTSA on the other side of i35 because there open everyday of the week and Lou is not.

On a side note the pics of the weapons on the wall and of Lou shooting the Barret 50 are mine and my brothers stuff.

thats very true

Re: A place in North Texas NOT to shoot

Cobra, Surely this Lou fella knows the law, and Gail just misquoted him. Hopefully.

If not, he and anyone else who thinks suppressors are illegal in Texas should check out P.C.46.05(c).

Re: A place in North Texas NOT to shoot

I stopped by today and Lou said all the idiots have ruined a good thing, the pit is about to be shut down for good, somebody shot a lightning arrester, people playing with there weapons while others are downrange, cutting trees down, trash, and just a general lack of respect and safety with firearms, he and Gail are sick of it.

For those uninclined to research the penal code---

(8) a chemical dispensing device; or
(9) a zip gun.
(b) It is a defense to prosecution under this section that
the actor's conduct was incidental to the performance of official
duty by the armed forces or national guard, a governmental law
enforcement agency, or a correctional facility.
(c) It is a defense to prosecution under this section that
the actor's possession was pursuant to registration pursuant to the
National Firearms Act, as amended.

Sounds like they should cut their loses and close up. Doesn't sound like a nice place to shoot at.

This is typical with most ranges that don't have constant supervision of the shooters. Take away accountability and people forget to bring their common sense and become idiots.

I don't blame them if they constantly have to deal with all that.
