A precision bolt gun from Taurus? the Taurus Expedition

Thats what I thought for sure when I saw the Expedition come out. I swore off Taurus long ago, but one of their guns broke into my safe, and created an infection a few years ago. That was the TX22, I've since bought 3 more. So I was willing to give them a possible look at, and then this Expedition showed up. Remington 700 compatible, AI magazines, 3-lug 60 degree bolt, MLOK stock, threaded 308 barrel, butt-hook, and so on. I'm not gonna lie fellas, I was not expecting to like this. But if it shoots well, its gonna stay.

I hope it works well for you. That being said, my family is 0 for 2 with Taurus handguns and I'm not needing anything in any niche that this covers.

I think the potential for hit and miss with these will exceed Savage.

I thhink most major manufacturers are trying to get into the bolt gun market...I hope they aren't forecasting a significant reduction (gub'ment imposed I assume) in their semi auto production lines.

I had some incredibly bad experiences in the past. But the TX22 sold me after a few bricks of ammo, and with 4 of them now I absolutely love them. But I also understand one model, doesn't constitute the brand. But I will certainly give this one a fair shake, and let it speak for itself. Haven't fired a shot yet, but everything so far seems pretty slick. I had the same experience with the Springfield Armory Redline though, and it turned out to let me down, and it broke my heart because I wanted to love that thing.

Well boys, I'll admit it was a little bit of a hurried range session, but I ran a few boxes of ammo through it last night. Accuracy wasn't anything extraordinary, but that could have been me to a degree. I'll see if I can find something the rifle likes better. I Found two things so far that some would find distasteful; First, the trigger has a very small movement prior to breaking, nothing terrible in my opinion. It is 100% consistent too, every time I feel the exact same thing. Not a big deal and I felt that it didn't affect my shooting at all.
The other thing is a bigger concern in my opinion. Most bolts when you close them have a feel, you can feel the cocking piece hang-up on the sear, and you can feel the lugs engage as the bolt-knob is pushed down. This bolt clearly has two different sensations of friction, the first feels quite normal, the second has a bit of a spike in tension, but immediately drops off. This translates into an occasional hangup while closing the bolt IF YOU RUN IT SLOWLY. I found that running the bolt at a normal tempo it was fine, and I never had any troubles. Several others who have handled the rifle so far also mentioned they felt this sensation while closing the bolt. But if you run the bolt the way your supposed to, it works fine.

I shot the rifle at 650 and 950 yards, and it performed as I expected based on groups at 100. As it sits right now, I felt this would be a perfectly fine rifle for shooting deer/elk inside six or seven hundred yards. Hitting vital sized targets at those distances was predictable.

For sure, I'm going to try a bunch of different things. So far, it shoots good enough that I'm pretty sure I can find something it will shoot even better.

The rep they earned with their semi auto pistols is not internet hype. They're really that bad. I've seen the same pistol go back to them numerous times, and still not make it through a mag.

You'll get no argument from me about historical performance. I'm curious to see when and if that page has been turned. Also, the MSRP for the Expedition is just shy of 1000, but if you actually look, it is selling all over for around $750 which is a bit more reasonable.

Got to the range again today, was able to give the rifle a more fair shake. These are the first ten rounds out of the gun today, the left group has a cold bore impact about 3/4 of an inch high, from there you can see how it did. I was pretty happy with the overall performance.

Cool. Better than I expected.

Is that a CHF barrel? Admittedly I haven't kept up with the specs of the rifle when it was released. I didn't see it in this write-up.
