My ax308 is a post '14. So it has the quick change barrels. I have built a custom in 6.5cm, as well as bought a hunting rifle in 6.5cm for my son, so I'm committed on getting setup in that caliber already. I have a second bolt that I was planning on doing 223 conversion, so if the 264prc is a option I might go that way.

I don't see a 300NM available now is the problem. So my options would be get a 338Lapua, 338Norma or 300win.

i would also like to know, as that looks like the good closed cell foam. its tough to find that stuff other than in 1" thick layers. would love to know who can and will do custom cut and fitting of the closed cell foam.

It came from case club. It seems to be several layers of the closed cell foam glued together. The case I ordered was for the AXMC rifle. I have altered it a little by cutting out some of the foam that was there to make certain items fit. I asked if they could alter the original foam a little to accommodate some other items but they could not. If I wanted one specific I had to order 10 cases and then I could specify how I wanted the foam to be cut.

Amazon prime has the 2” thick closed cell foam (the good stuff) for like $60 a sheet. Each sheet fits a large rifle pelican/storm case. This stuff was $40 a sheet last November when I ordered it.

Morning I forgot to take a bolt handle measurements on my AX this morning.

Ax or axmc (post 2014)

what is the distance from the center of the bolt to the bottom of the bolt handle knob (how far down does it go when looking from the side)

What is the distance from center of the bolt to outside edge of bolt handle knob (how far does it stick out when looking from the top)

Anyone in the engineering field explain what the advantages or disadvantages of an AI bolt head verse a standard two or three lug bolt head.

Tough question without drawings and AI Technical specs.
Is the six lug system designed for accuracy or Artic Warfare?
I think one key to accuracy is the epoxy bonding of the receiver to chassis and probably the tolerances to which the parts are designed and manufactured to along with QA and QC.
I know that was the feature I most liked when I purchased my AIAX this year.
You pay for the increased time to do all things to increased standards and QA/QC.
Weatherby introduced the 9 lug bolt for pressure retension, the Weatherby 6 lug Bolt is for non-Weatherby cartridges.
Can you shoot a Weatherby 300 Magnum in another action, sure, but the bolt lug surface has to be sized to handle the stress from firing along with the correct material.
But so far no one I know has used the Weatherby 300 Magnum as a Sniper Round!
The Winchester 300 Magnum appears to rule the roost.
I have a Rem Model 7 in 300 SAUM for hunting and it’s too light to shoot on the range but some Rem Law Enforcement models have been chambered in 300 SAUM but most now use the 300 Win Short Action Magnum.
So the more lugs, the smaller the lug can be, think of a single lug to hold the pressure, obviously it has to be big.
Weatherby wanted his Mark V to handle the increased pressures of his proprietary ammunition and of the handloaders who were testing the bounds of action strength.
I have only purchased one Weatherby Vanguard with 2 lugs in 30/06 having no desire to shoot the Weatherby 300 Magnum.
Now even the Vanguard is chambered in 300 Weatherby, so 9 lugs or 2 lugs, each can handle the pressure.
The Model 7 in 300 SAUM is for bear after 140gr 7mm-08 Nosler failed to break the off side shoulder of a small black bear from a Rem Model 7SS.

Think about going from 2 to 6 lugs. Three times (300%) as many so they could reduce each lug contact area by a significant area but still increase the overall area by a significant percentage. The reduced amount of contact on each lug is what makes it easier to lift the bolt. The three lug design is used to have the 60 degree lift compared to 90 degree for 2 lug designs.

BTW, my 2012 AW has three lugs, standard bolt face. The magnums had 6 lugs. I don't know when they went to 6 lugs for all, probably during the switch barrel design change.

Sorry I’m a bit late to the hat discussion. I’ll have to find mine. I got it when I was in the UK last year. On mine, where it’s embroidered “finest sniper rifle” or whatever it says.... rifle is spelled wrong lol.

next thing, I have an AXMC, and I want to put a short(16”) barrel on it. Does anyone have one they can throw on, and get me a total overall length? Thanks

You can't run a 16" tube with the full length axmc handguard you will need to find one for a axsa which is 13"...I already went down this road last year I think you can get away iirm with 17.5 with the factory length axmc 16" handguard...I guess technically you could run the 16" tube but like only 1/8" will be sticking out of the handguard

Now that you say that, I remember you talking about that. Thanks for the info. With the regular MC handguard, does 17.5 give you enough to grab on to to tighten the barrel?

Don’t you have your MC in hand? The math is easy. Measure the length of the handguard (~16”) then add the tenon length (1.5”) and muzzle thread length (0.6”). Then add however much you want to stick out.

Don’t forget with the AX series you can remove the handguard when installing and uninstalling the barrel. It’s only 2 screws, so it’s not a big hassle to remove it. That way you could have an 18.25” barrel that you could still hand tighten, but only sticks out the front enough for the threaded muzzle shoulder to clear the handguard.

What are you looking to have on the end? A brake, a threaded break ready to accept a moderator. If an independent moderator, what moderator.... is it end of barrel or does it reflex down the barrel at all?

Clubsportmark, my current plan is a 20" barrel contoured for an aem5, which reflexes about 2.5" from the muzzle.

Sam, I should have known it would be that simple. I didn't know if the handguard had a nominal length like some on the market do. Some quick math says I should be ok, but barely.

Its a tough place because the wind. All the places I can shoot longer distances are set up for shooting across valleys. The wind is never consistent, and hardly ever calm.

I ended up staying until it started getting dark. All in all it was a great day. Was only holding .5-1.4mil for wind at 700yds.

Range date with the new girl went well. I think I’ll have a second date with her tomorrow 😂 found some good nodes right where others found them so I’m gonna start the jump tests with the VLD’s. And do a ton of dry fire before hand because wow, it’s a whole different animal from the TT 2 stage diamonds I’m used to.

Sorry rechecked my notes...18.5-18.75" prolly to play it safe overall length would get you enough for wrench flats and .6ish muzzle threads...
I said screw it and just went back to my 20" win tac barrel
