Thinking about a 300 Norma next year and just looking into some receiver options. Are the 338 offerings from defiance or stiller any more beefy than their long action counterparts? How would the Deviant or Stiller tac338 compare to the Surgeon XL?

Along those lines, how hard is it to find blanks for the Surgeon XL with the wider tenon diameter?

I had a 300NM built on a tac338 action. I sold it. If I was going to build another I’d build it on a defiance/mausingfield/surgeon/anything other than a stiller. The stiller tac338 is larger than its LA variant and you’ll need to order stocks specifically for that action.

Surgeon XL requires minimum 1.35 barrel which is considered as over size barrel which 100+- price difference vs standard 1.25.
Deviant lapua action comes with .750 bolt (bigger than standard .700 remington footprint)
But it can take 1.20-1.35 barrel, and action will drop in into 99% long action footprint chassis or stocks..

I wouldn't considered the larger diameter barrel a deterrent - the upcharge is reletively negligible and all the stocks I'm interested have the XL variant.

I've been looking at the xl, badger 2013 and tac 338 because of the larger tenon size. It seems like a lot of builders prefer the larger tenon diameter for the lapua bolt face cartridges even for the norma. The blanks seem easier to find since the AXMC requires them as well.

Hands down my vote goes to the defiance deviant tactical w/ 338 lapua bolt face. With CIP length bottom metal/mag, it is the smoothest feeding rifle I own. Even with hanging the longer/higher bc bullets out, it still feeds flawlessly.

My .300NM is built on a Defiance Deviant action with CIP mag cut. Rails are polished and the action DLC'ed. It's a great action for this purpose.

I would also consider a Mausingfield (have one in SA and love it) or Surgeon XL. I wouldn't even bother looking at Curtis or Stiller.
