    Adelaide, South Australia
We are planning a trip for late August next year (40th wedding anniversary), will be visiting LA, Las Vegas and San Francisco. I am hoping to fit in a one day fishing charter and also some range shooting (300-600+ yards). My shooting has been very limited since leaving the Australian military 20 years ago. Are there any ranges in these areas where I could hire a 7.62 / 308 and do I need any sort of permit for this activity? I know I will need a fishing licence.

Check out Dana Point for your fishing when you're around LA. You won't need a permit to shoot, but I can't give any recommendations to a range in that area where you could rent a rifle.

Avoid Las Vegas, especially in late August. Vegas is nothing but a piss hole now and will be very hot in late August. South Tahoe is much nicer, cleaner and cooler. Palomino Rifle Club near Reno has a 1000 yard range and matches most weekends. If I am in town you can use one of my rifles. San Francisco is a worse piss hole than Vegas but not nearly as hot in August. There are a lot of really cool things to see up and down the coast like the aquarium in Monterey, the Red Woods, the Napa Valley wine country, Yellowstone, fishing charters out of Halfmoon Bay. I have driven every mile of the PCH and once you get north of the Bay Area it gets really nice. The drive up from LA is nice once you leave the metro area. If you have time the drive up to Astoria OR or even Port Townsend WA are worth it.

Thanks for the info and the offer guys, early stages of planning at this time. A few years ago I spent some time on a job in Kingman AZ, when I finished the wife flew out and we spent some time in Vegas, LA and San Diego, she wants to go back to Vegas and LA and also see San Francisco this time. South Tahoe looks interesting, time for more Googling.

Don't go to any outdoor country music concerts in Vegas. Oops, too soon?

168BTHPM is right about Hell's Oven (August in Vegas). October, November, March and April are the months for Lost Wages. Go up to Red Rocks when in town.

The Tetons are great in August. Shooting in Wyoming at LR is possible, see Gunwerks and other places that rent guns and have training. The high country of CO also is good for late August.

168BTHPM has it right regarding Astoria and/or Port Townsend. Hell, I'd go as far to say ya might as well go all the way out to Port Angeles and Cape Flattery out around Neah Bay, Sekiu, and Clallam Bay, my old stomping grounds. Fishing is outstanding there as well and scenic as all get out. You make it up around these parts I'll hook ya up with guns n ammo time and get ya steered in the right direction for the Buoy 10 fishery in the Columbia. ;) Hell, if I have time I'd take ya out on the water myself in my little 16ft center console. But you have to drink beer. I'll even bait your hook. You swing thru here you let me know if you're so inclined.

Astoria in the background. Looking west with the Columbia River Bar in the distance and the Mouth of the Columbia/Pacific Ocean.

Sorry I am going to have to call bullshit on the 11 years, it has rained there every day since Christ walked the earth.

Santa Ana's blow around late July or August... It's 116 and winds blow only hot, dry air making it hotter. You think Death Valley is hot? It gets hotter that time of year. My great Cali experience was sucking at NTC (when those goddamn winds blew, I expected some relief; uh-uh. Shit just gets hotter.) and farting around Tijuana, which I would highly recommend against these days. CA is basically a no-gun state, FWIW. NV and AZ have some of the better rental ranges I hear --machineguns, whatever. I second going farther north that time of year. Or Europe.

Astoria is where Goonies was filmed and that coast is pretty unique, but I'd keep going past that. BC is nice too --if you want the urban city experience, I'd go to Vancouver. It's like an American city, but cleaner and the girls are all hot. Most of the TV shows and movies you see shot in the open city these days are filmed in downtown Vancouver.

Where I'd recommend you go are the national parks. That's our big secret really. It's hard to pick a bad one. Mt. Rainier is AWESOME. I'm not religious, but I always feel like I'm in church on that mountain. There are a lot out West, don't miss that.

I can tell you what the cities are like --any other city. They all have their little quirky environs, but usually that shit belongs to a trust otherwise it'd be McDonalds and Starbucks too. FULL of tourists.

With the national parks though you won't spend most of your vacation in traffic. Remember the traffic here in populated regions can waste hours.

Portland and Seattle have undergrounds too that are open to the public. By "underground" I mean underground "cities". The best beer in US is in Pac NW too, as well as the best seafood (we get first pick).

Yes Vegas is hot in August. That’s what makes it fun.

Nice air conditioned hotel room. Hit the pool either early morning or late afternoon.

Vegas has changed as millenails don’t gamble.
Vegas is now expensive and delivers an experience.

As long as you properly manage the clock, Vegas is great. Just not wandering the strip from 11:15-3 in August.

    Lots if music events
    lots of shows
    lots of amazing food
shops like bass pro with a gazilian stuffed mounts

shooting ranges like Pro 2A that has a sweet Pro shop and rents about everything.

Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club is all right too (about a 25 minute drive from Las Vegas proper). Courtesy range for non-members and steel out to 1k yards if you can get a pal/Hide Buddy to let you tag along. Would offer, but I let my membership lapse ...

I wouldn't bother fishing at Lake Mead.

Red Rock is great, and cheap; Atomic Testing Museum is worth a trip; for a stiff drink done right, Atomic Liquors Downtown is perfect.
