I put together an AP M5 Creedmoor build a few years ago. Through careful shopping and patience I'm in for about $1200, not including the optic.

I have shot it a few times at 100 yards and finally took it over to the 300 yard line this week.

I used Hornady 147 ELD's at 100 yards and the rifle seemed to like them

@100 yards. The three square pasters are covering three warm up shots I took with the 140 gr Hornady "American Gunner" ammo. My son and I then took turns shooting three-shot groups using the Hornady 147 gr ELD match ammo. 4 groups, all averaging about .75 MOA.

At 300 yards, it really liked the 140 gr Hornady American Gunner (almost exactly 2" or about 2/3 MOA)...

It didn't like the Sig Sauer ammo much (about 4" or 1.33 MOA)

A solid build for this price is definitely doable. Mine was around $1,600 but I dropped in a Geissele trigger and the PRS stock, JP SCS, etc which pushed the price up.

Great work for a “budget” build! Not a bad looking rig either!

Thanks, AMP

I was into the rifle for about $1100, but then dropped a Rise Armament trigger that was on sale at DVOR for $80 and a Tubbs flat wire recoil spring, which helped with an occasional failure to hold open on the last shot. That brought me to $1200. I've glommed a Magpul PRS stock that was on sale and intend to install that. That will bring me to about $1380.

Currently I've got a Vortex Viper 6.5-20 x 44 scope with a mildot reticle on the rifle.

I guess my question is, what should be my next upgrade?

Adj. GB , and make sure it will fit under your FF tube ( SLR ),..... and a 9.3oz KAK 308 rifle length buffer... and a Muzzle Brake ( Lantac )

Wait for the next sale .... or see if there is a Brownells coupon for "X" dollars - "X" % off.

Turn that rifle into a very soft shooting firearm.

re thebarrel specs
What are the barrel specs , gas system, gas block?

Barrel is a 22" Ballistic Advantage. Here are the specs...

Here are the specs for the upper

It is a rifle length gas system, non adjustable gas block, as far as I know.

Are the .308 muzzle brakes compatible with 6.5 Creedmoor?

As mention above needs to be the same muzzle threads.

That is all I have used until recently, and yes, from what I have read you only lose a very slight amount of "effectiveness" with a 308 brake on a 6.5CM... as in >7% ish.

Which to me, could be the difference between a factory light load and a heavy load... S&B 140gr v. Hornady 147gr type thing

And FWIW... I am not a fan of any brake that expels the gas toward the shooter / trigger puller... off to the side at a 90° is fine for me, any angle back towards you, while typically more effective taming recoil, is blast crazy annoying.

I also built an Aero Precision M5 in 308 Win. Originally I had a Ballistic Advantage Premium series bull barrel on it, but I struggled to get it to shoot 1 MOA. Ended up sending it back twice for headspace issues and ultimately switched over to a Criterion 24-inch from Fulton Armory. My Criterion seems to be a shooter is hovers around 0.6 MOA, sometimes less and sometimes more.

Seems like I just got unlucky with my Ballistic Advantage barrel :/

I've got to get my AP 22" up to the farm and wring it out. Hope mine works as well as yours with factory fodder.

I've got a .308 Aero Precision M5 also. It is a 20"and has a lighter barrel profile than the Creedmoor. I'm still trying to work that out...not nearly as precise as the Creedmoor.

Let us know how it runs...

I just built an 18" M5 in 308. Getting .6" MOA with one of my old 168g SMK loads. Still breaking mine in, but it's a shooter. Thinking that I need to get a 6.5 upper in the near future.
