AIAX Butt stock/Chassis Conversion

Question,
Is the AX butt stock conversion worth the price, rather than the adjustable butt plate on the standard butt stock of the AIAT?
Pictures show it to be a huge, gaudy addition that appear to overwhelm the rifle.
Is it the extra adjustment that much advantage?

Samb’s conversion or an MPA chassis would probably be the better solution anyway. I know I’m in the minority, but the AX chassis is butt ugly

The AX butt stock is about $900 installed butt to me its not worth it. I rather buy an MPA conversion. But then again I am one of the few that prefer the AT over AX cuase I dont have an AX.

To me it was well worth it, I could never get the AT buttstock to fit comfortably into my shoulder pocket where I wanted it. The AX buttstock has great vertical adjustments and it's much more comfortable to me. The right side fold over the bolt handle is also preferred because I usually have my rifle in a soft case or strapped to a pack and I did't know how annoying it was until I installed the AX buttstock. You can buy the buttstock and easily install it yourself, I bought mine from Scopelist (EuroOptic) for around $750. I prefer the ergonomics of the AT vs AX for the type of shooting I do and with the buttstock conversion you get the best of both worlds. Flat bottom of the AT rides really nice on a game changer and the bipod spigot works great for me as well. Go for it!

Thank ya for the info/review. I agree that the ergos and lines of the AT are better for me, but the back end can be a little troublesome, especially in the woods trying to set up for a shot.
I saw a Vickers review of the AIAT LE and it helped to watch the stock in use.

No, I already had 1.32'' Spuhr (SP-4006) and at the lowest setting its perfect for me.

If you decide to go the AX route and your current configuration is too high @samb300 makes a low cheek piece replacement that's a much cheaper alternative than replacing rail or scope mount.

Have you had the skins off ? If it has the two piece chassis it would be the same as an AT. I don’t know if the is and AT only thing or not.

Take the skins off and post a picture of the chassis+buttstock junction. I'm thinking it won't work, at least in the traditional installation. It might work if you de-bond the AX buttstock from the square tube, and then install it into the square tube of the AE. But if you read through the linked thread in post #16, they are definitely not the same. Best case, if you get it to work you'll lose the folding stock capture and QD mount.

@SFree what's your main use for your AI? Comp, hunting, bench shooting, general plinking? Will anyone else ever be shooting it?

If the $800 doesn't matter to you (not saying you're a bazillionaire, just suggesting the price isn't the hang up), the AX buttstock is definitely worth the upgrade. If the price is a factor, then maybe keeping the AT buttstock but de-bonding and swapping with the MPA or my chassis would provide more value. Push come to shove, I'd rather have a modern chassis up front than keep the AT forend and swapping the buttstock.

The only downsides I have found to the conversion is price and weight at the rear. If you’re running long truck axle barrels the weight at the rear could help balance. I prefer shorter barrels so it is a small downside to me.

The only functionality a AT LE gives up to a short action AX is the side cutout to help mag changes. You can add a NV bridge and keyslot inserts to the AT to gain the other stuff.

I sold my factory takeoff stock to help offset the cost.

I did the AT to AX using the thread that detailed the process. I appreciated the additional adjustability, but the cheek piece had to be adjusted all the way down, even though I had a 1.5" Spuhr. I put a low rise check piece on from SamB but would have preferred more adjustability.

The AT chassis holds the receiver much lower than does an AX. So, a true AX will have a higher rise whereas the AT will be much lower due to the chassis differences.

I sold off my AI AT/AX as the ergonomics of a true AX were simply better for me - YMMV, but get behind an AX and it will become apparent.

The relationship between the action, chassis, and buttstock are identical on both the AT and AX. The only difference (from the factory) is the AX has the "tall" action rail.

Using the "low" action rail on the AT with an AX buttstock will prove to be a challenge for most if using low rings, some like yourself even with 1.5" rings. I have the "tall" action rail on my AX with a 1.18" Spuhr, and have plenty of adjustment using my low cheek piece.

The only piece of kit that gets the cheek piece even lower is the AX-AICS buttstock, which actually is slightly different than the AX308 or AXMC buttstock.

I don’t disagree with anything Sam has said in regards to competition side of things.

My rifle balances somewhere in the front half of the magazine well with the NV bridge, Atlas bipod, and an 18” Gradous .308 barrel that I think is sendero profile.

I did end up swapping to the high action rail to gain some cheek clearance. It’s tight but doable with the short action rail.

Save the $750 and spend it on ammo and a course. The AT adjustable butt plate and the thumbscrews really make it a ridiculous purchase.

I've had my AT for a bit. Came from a TRG. I have the target adjustable butt plate and adjustment wise...ehh, it's good for what it is. Keep in mind I've shot my TRG for years, and it rivals the AT as far as adjustability so I'm a bit biased I suppose. For $115 bucks, I say go for it.

I can measure the up and down if you want. I wanna get the AX conversion myself but I'm leary because I run the cheek riser way right, in fact I wish I could get it farther

Theres side to side adjustment in the AX cheek rest. I believe it’s about the same as the AT stock, however I’m not 100% sure.

I ran my AT cheek rest to the right as well. The AX stock is angled where your cheek rests. I have my AX cheek rest set close to center just slightly favoring the right.

The AX stock is heavier. My rifle with atlas bipod and spigot, 3-20PM2, Spuhr Mount, NV bridge, RRS plate, and 18” barrel weighs 17.5 lbs.

Always been curious what mine weighs, but I refuse to put a fatty scale in the house and remind myself of my former studlyness lol. Only difference in mine is no bridge, no rrs, 3-27pmII and 24” barrel. Gotta be close to yours

I think it works well, drops the butt below the collar bone and slants it to fit into the shoulder pocket.

I went with an adjustable buttplate for my pre2014 AX, I was waiting to see the cost of the conversion. I was really hoping for $500 and was willing to go up to $600.00 but at $900.00? Fuck that! When I stopped to think about it, its a set and forget type of thing. I'm the only one shooting my rifle, I let a friend shoot it once but other then that it's just me. Once I set it, I left it alone so I guess I really did not need the quick adjustability of the new AX buttstock.
