I like my 7.62 x 39mm chambered AR-15...precise like an AR-15 but knockdown power of an AK-47, just need to convert it to gas piston to make it reliable/cleaner running like an AK47. 17 cents per round is nice too...M67 Yugo rounds would be the cats meow for a Zombie Apocalypse : )
7.62 x 39mm is also the perfect case for subsonic loads, subsonic will also "cycle" in both AR and AK platforms...
Here's what I run, starting at $365 for the complete upper, option how you want...I'm getting 2,450fps out of my 20'' barrel with 4 different flavors of 123-125gr ammo.

I spent 13 years working in different areas of SOCOM as an 18B (Special Forces Small Arms Expert). I have carried anything from an SKS to an MP5 (one of my favorites) to the MK12 Mod 0 and several AK family variants. I was also responsible for outfitting several indigenous forces all over the world, to include putting together weapons out of buckets of parts, pretty scary to be honest and I found as long as they were kept clean and they didn’t rattle to much they all ran ok. I also found that most of the forces I worked with outside of the US all would grab the AR type weapon first. Now, that being said, they usually would gravitate towards anything American because it was cool. But isn’t that the best reason of all?

Personially I like the AK, because it can be rusted all on the inside because say you forgot you clean it after using corrosive ammo and the gun will still work get get.
You can put the shittiest ammo possible in it go through 500 round without a single jam and even go to 1000.
The scope mounting system i think is better then the rail, because you can quickly change optics and if the optics have been zeroed they will still be zeroed even after being taken off and being put back on.
Tons of after market parts so you can get the right feel on the rifle.
And because the rifle is so simple you can replace parts with wrong parts and it will work, Atleast so the storys say.
But mainly I want a rifle I always know will go bang even when I don't clean it or treat it right, because if a rifle can't handle abuse would you ever really feel safe using it in one of those theoretical situations.
But note if your not say going into the wilderness or a shit filled area, and wont have the problem with parts then the AR will surpass the AK why because both will prove highly reliable than. Thus the AR will come up top, because when it come to a mud gun that can handle any weather any wear and tear the AK in your gun, but when the environment isn't a mess the AR comes up top.
Remember both guns are equal, what makes one better then the other is how and where you'll use it. And that's the truth.

Get an AR in 7.62x39 BAM!! best of both worlds!!! You get a hard hitting cartridge with the accuracy of an AR barrel. also the ease of a flat top receiver for mounting optics.

Thats just pathetic, but then again I had a extremely nice polish AK-47 that could just barely get 2.5 moa which is extremely good.
But I only had a range that went to 100 yards sadly, thou I wish I could have tested my AK at 300 yards.
Anyways something I forgot to mention is a study done I think during the korean war, *note barely remember it* anyways the study was about the ranges the enemy would get engage at by our guys. What was found out most of the time US soldiers would start firing at around 100-200 yards, even thou there rifles could reach out to 600 yards.
Again i don' remember the exact numbers i'm just going off of what i think i remember from it.
But it says a lot, since you by have a rifle of greater range but in general you and/or most people will start firing at a much shorter range.
if someone knows what I'm talking about please post a link to the study it's really interesting and would be useful on this subject.

Then there are soldiers who actually want to win, and they will try to hit the enemy as far out as they can see them. Carlos Hathcock comes to mind. I believe the book mentioned he was shooting pretty far with his M60 before he was selected for the sniper program.
I think soldiers are better trained than they used to be, and better sighting systems no doubt help. (ACOG's, Leupolds etc).

I think a big part of it might be waiting until you are sure to make the shoot. In Korea, they had limited ammo and worst yet soldiers that could shoot very well. After WWII the US deactivated most of its army and when the Korean war started the had to activate mostly reserve units that were just that reserve and not trained the same as the active duty soldier The battle of Osan were task force smith of the 24th infantry division was wiped out. It prompted a saying in the Army that lives on to this day, No more task force smith, meaning we will never get caught with our pants down again from having untrained troops. They were told to wait until they knew they could hit them.
