Looking for a smith up here in Alaska to do a little work. I want to get my firing pin bushed on a LH SA Remington short action. Then I want to get a .260 Remjngton barrel chambered, cut to 18.5", threaded for a break and put on my action (RH SA Remington 700). I want the RH M700 action trued or checked to make sure it's trued (not entirely sure) then I wanted to add a little weight to the trigger and bring it up to 3lbs versus the 1.5lbs it's at right now.

I won't take my gun to Wild Wesr Guns, they overcharge for their work and I don't like their CS (personal opinion, not an attack). There is Arctic Custom guns here in Wasilla who could probably do some of the work but he doesn't have the reamer and a coupel other things. Another things is Mark Moffit over at M&M machining but I have never seen or heard anything about his work.

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated, thanks.

I think that your best bet is to send it to GA Precision. I don't know of anyone in AK doing the kind of work that you want.

I agree about WWG. I wouldn't let them touch my Daisy Red Ryder, let alone something more expensive.

Re: Alaska gunsmiths? Need some work done.

Well I want it semi local cause I only have till September to use my guns and I figure locally I can not only get a good turnaround but I can take a look at their work and decide for myself whether or not I want my gun in their hands if you know what I mean?

I'll give Ken a call Monday or so and see what he has to say. Any idea what his work is like? What his business is? Possible pictures?

Re: Alaska gunsmiths? Need some work done.

I just know he runs a gunshop in anchorage and has a couple gunsmiths working for him.

I left Alaska in 94 so havent kept up. There was one guy who had a little gunshop on Muldoon Rd. Forgot his name, kind of quiet but did excellant work.

I dont know if Wayne Young is still around, He use to be an armor for the Army Marksmanship Unit. In fact he's the Gunsmith the AMU took to Vietnam to start the Sniper Program over there.

Mountain View Sporting goods (which hasnt been in Mt View for a long time) use to have some good gun mechanics. As did the Gun Traders.

Like I said,its been a long time.

sorry for the hijack but, I'm in the same boat..looking for a precision rifle smith in anchorage. I called that number above, but wild west guns picked up... Does ken work in that shop?

Re: Alaska gunsmiths? Need some work done.

There is a guy up in Fairbanks, can't think of the name of his shop. Arctic something, but I have heard he does good work. I can't vouch for him myself (never used him). I have also heard he can be rude and not friendly.

Re: Alaska gunsmiths? Need some work done.

One name: Stan Jackson in Anchorage. He is on the slow side and may cost more than most but WWG but gets most of the work. 250-0252 finding his shop is an ordeal.

There is another, he is on Old Seward and Dimond. Can not remember his name but have heard good things. I remember now
Alaska Custom Firearms 349-4867

Precision Arms I have heard about but that is about it.

I will say, there are a few around that have not done good work, service was poor at best, WWG wont open that can!

Actions by Gene is no longer in business, he retired.

The best riflsmith in the city imho is:
Accuracy Arms, Homer Strickland is the owner and smith.
He's in Anchorage 346-2304

He did some excellent work on some rifles for me.
