Ammo and phone numbers???

So I was at a local sporting goods store today and I overheard one of the ladies that works there say that she was called by the state police. She went on to say that the policeman asked her if she had been writing down the name and phone numbers of people purchasing ammo. Does anyone have thoughts on why we would need to give that type of info to purchase ammo?

If you're old enough to remember, part of GCA '68 required that a retailer log all sales of ammunition that was suitable for use in a revolver or pistol.
Log included the buyer name, phone and DL number and address.

All this accomplished was to boost sales of spiral bound notebooks for about 2 decades.

This stupidity comes in cycles.

Dude you live in Michigan - it's been fooked for a while. There are some beautiful areas in MI that I enjoy, especially the UP, but the moocher vs contributor ratio has been royally skewed for the last 20 years, and as a consequence less "free" than many other states and continues to drag the other citizens down.

Thanks for the replies. I have grown up small town where everybody knows everybody and its never been an issue buying ammo up here (no clue around detroit area). But if that is SOP Ill roll with it.

I went into a local store in Tx to buy powder and they wanted my full name. I looked at the lady and said are you serious and left. Store was abilene indoor shooting range! Never again

Well not sure how things were going because they checked the id of the lady in front of me. So I figured they would check mine also, not sure of thier store policy's but they WON'T be getting any of business any more. I really didn't need the powder but would buy a pound of any that I can use whenever I'm close to a shop
