Range Report Ammo help for my 308

Re: Ammo help for my 308

where do you start on an answer to that with all the premium factory and handloaded ammo for .308? lots of factors and personal preferences on the subject, i'd suggest using the search function using .308 ammo, hornady amax or sst .308 ammo, sierra matchking blitzking .308 ammo, 168 grain, 175 grain, 165 grain, etc. to find a whole lot of information on the same question.

Re: Ammo help for my 308

I have close to the same barrel as you do, the Federal Gold Medal Match 168 were what really got me into precision shooting, before using those I though all rifles shot 3" groups at 100yds, try a box, and I think youll be pleased.

Welcome to the 'hide.
FGMM 168 and 175 are the gold standard of factory ammo. If you can get it it will give you a great baseline to compare everything else to.

Good ammo comes with a high price tag. Unless you don't mind the high price, reloading is probably a better way to go. Don't know about the 168 grains, but I use the 155 grains Lapua scenars. Shoot it out to 1K easily and all the time.

Re: Ammo help for my 308

I dont mean to steal this forum but i have a few questions, i have just purchased my first remington 700 sps tactical .308 and have no idea on what ammo to push through it, its 1 to 12 twist so i couuld push a lighter bullet and still hold good groups... any suggestions

Re: Ammo help for my 308

My suggestion is to reload you own. I've got the sps tactical 20". I'm getting 3/8" @ 100yds, reloading my own. I use 168gr. SMK or Hornady A-MAX. I've tried several powders and Vihta N140 works best for me, 41gr. I'm seating the bullet out to a OAL of 2.957". You'll have to load them one at a time though, as they won't fit in the magazine.

Re: Ammo help for my 308

I ran some American Eagle through mine, then went to reloads. Everyone has great things to say about the Federal Gold Medal Match. You might want to start there.

Re: Ammo help for my 308

To both question askers:

After trying a LOT of factory ammo, not inluding Lapua, I found these most accurate:

(1) Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr HPBT
(2) Hornady 168gr A-MAX match
(3) Prvi Patizan 168gr match HPBT (less than $20/cox !!!)

In a cold/lukewarm barrel accuracy in order was (2) (1) tied with (3)

If a HOT barrel it was (2) (3) (1)

this was in a Rock River with 26" varmint barrel, 1:10" twist
and now a Remington 700SPS Tactical, 20" barrel, 1:12" twist.

Neither rifle liked 147gr WWB nor 150gr surplus, nor AE 155gr.

Lake City (173gr) and Black Hills (175gr) were 'ok' but not as good as the 168gr at 100 meters.
