anemometer recommendation?

Got a gift card for Amazon and would like an anemometer so I can plug data into an app for a firing solution. Curious which ones you guys might recommend to use for that right now. I see a bunch around $15-$40 and not sure what I'm looking at in them. Just don't have the funds for a nice Kestrel right now.

Also I'm using 4DoF as my app. Is there another one that might work better for manual input of data?

Thanks!

Probably the cheapest one that will connect to 4DoF. They can be super fussy doing so and keeping connected.

Saving for a Kestrel is the best advice.

If not for the Amazon limitation I'd say install Ventusky on your phone and pay the $11 a year for the Premium layers.

How about one of these, I haven’t used one, but they look pretty capable:

I’m kind of in the same boat. I am wanting a weather meter so I have better data in my ballistics app (Chairgun, I know, but I can’t get Strelok back on my iPhone) for hunting in the mountains, but I don’t want to have to buy a $700 Kestrel. I don’t even use Applied Ballistics yet as the reviews are too mixed and I’ll never shoot over 600 yards at an animal anyway. Kestrel wise the cheapest unit I would buy is the 4DOF which is less, but still overkill for my use. I’m looking at it, but haven’t pulled the trigger.

You dont have to buy a ballistic kestrel. Almost all kestrels collect almost the same data. Most environmental factors used in shooting are used in prescribed burning and pesticide spraying. You can get an industry model for 200.00. If you know a registered forester you can get them to order it for you for 7-10% off

Buy one and plug stuff in manually to your own calculator.

Just get a 2500 or 5000 series and you het the same data as the balistic models. They just dont connect to an app.

Mine goes from spraying during the week to the range.

My question to all you who use the Kestrels geared toward hunting with a ballistics program is one of the features listed for them vs the forestry models, is wind direction. I’m not sure how it calculates wind direction and integrates it into a firing solution considering the direction of the shot not to mention the shot angle. I should probably watch some YouTube’s about the features.

You calibrate the compass in the shooting solution you put your direction of fire and then you put the back of the kestrel into the wind and it calculates the difference to give you your wind correction

None really do without a weather vain (with common sense/reading the wind you dont need a vain). You can't just hold the meter up and expect it to tell direction. You have to look at the wind speed and see when it is a "stablish" speed and determine your direction from that. You have to be able to do some basic orienteering and use common sense.

Or

The weather vain orients the kestrel to the direction the wind is blowing automatically.

or if you want the cool model:

If you have a ballistic model and cannot actually work the meter then the data that goes to the app is crap. The big difference between the ballistic and non ballistic models is that "YOU" have to manually enter the data, the ballistic models automatically enter data to the paired app. That's the only difference. It takes the data you put in and other known variables in the app (Bullet, FPS, ect) and creates a solution. All you do for the recommended ones is manually enter the info, that's the only difference, they are as accurate, durable, ect as the higher priced ballistic models.

This can be done one of two ways. With the Kestrel you can find the wind direction (just let the lanyard hang off the bottom to see this) and point it into the wind. The compass needs to be calibrated to do this, and then the device will correctly calculate the crosswind.

The other option is with the Calypso AB Mini wind meters, which only need to be pointed at the target and they can automatically calculate the crosswind.
