Philadelphia, PA.
Hello all, happy holidays. I am learning about shooting and hope to be a responsible hunter in the future. This site has excellent information. While long range shooting/hunting seems to be quite popular, I plan on staying within the maximum point blank range for a given vital size and cartridge. My question is: can I ignore the angle of the shot if I stay within the MPBR? Thank you very much.

Re: Angle and maximum Point Blank Range

Yes.

Within normal circumstances ( qualifier crawfish statement ), any thing inside 300 yards and less than 30 degrees, the amount of change should be well inside your PBZ. FWIW, on our ranch, we can't simulate a decent angle shot, even with the hills we have. You need mountains to get that.

Mikee Booshay,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the information, I had a feeling I would not have to worry about it. However, every time I think I have figured something out, it raises another question. With wind, temperature, angle, ballistics, and other stuff; I wonder how anybody hits anything. Fascinating to learn about though, thanks again.

Re: Angle and maximum Point Blank Range

If you are hunting in SE Pa.. unless you get permission from a farmer to hunt his fields damn near any caliber/cartridge you choose will be sufficient. Hunting the mountains of PA you may get a 150 yard shot if you are lucky. Save hunting a power line.
Although the variables you mention are indeed interesting. In a hunting situation where you are they have little affect on you placement. Given the ranges you will have opportunities to harvest game. If you head to the mountains you may, may have to learn angles but it is unlikely. Get into some areas of Bucks or Berks county and get lucky enough to have a farmer let you hunt. Things may get interesting then.

Re: Angle and maximum Point Blank Range

My uncle asked me about this recently, and i told him not to even worry about it. At the ranges that your going to be shooting, don't worry about it. Even if the bullet does hit high your still gonna be 'minute of deer' and that bullet will still go right through the boiler room, I imagine that you'd have to be 60 foot up a tree and the deer almost right under you for it to really matter much.

Re: Angle and maximum Point Blank Range

Cocadori,

Thank you for your reply. You are certainly right about SE PA. In the counties surrounding Philadelphia, centerfires are not even allowed. My question was more academic than anything. I have been learning so much from sites like this one as well as others. What I have found is that - as soon as I learn something, new questions arise. Once I have learned the basics I would like to Elk hunt out West in the future. Thank you all for your willingness to share.

bornhunter04,

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I suspected as much but I felt the need to confirm my thoughts with experienced shooters. At this point my experience has been through reading and research. I know what you are going to say - Get out there and start shooting more. I have only shot a 22LR at this point. I hope to purchase my first centerfire rifle this spring.

No problem. gotta get out there and do it to learn but it never hurts to ask first usually leads to less frustration and money spent.....
