Annealeez Setting Seems Very Low/Slow

I set up and ran a few test pieces of Peterson 6mm Creedmoor brass through my Annealeez this afternoon to get it dialed in before doing a whole batch.

This is an unmodified Gen II
Inner blue flame set about 1/8”-1/4” off the brass at pretty close to the middle of the shoulder.

Several concerns...

First
I started at 55 for speed and had to continually turn the speed down to a final setting of 38 to get what I would call a properly annealed case with regard to the Primal Right method.

That seems like a VERY slow setting?

Second.
The blue bottom wheel is clean.
With the flame off, cases rotate reliably. With the flame on, they are very intermittent. I cleaned it with a cloth dampened with brake parts cleaner. Still intermittent.

Third.
Can I get a visual critique on the brass that was ran at my final setting of “38”?

Hard to get a true color representation

The look dependent on case cleanliness. Put a dab of 750 tempilaq inside the neck away from direct flame contact and corrdinate its time in the flame to end right when the laquer turns clear.

Some 0000 steel wool on a small brush or something will scrape the tempilaq out of the neck once its been cooked.

But the tempilaq is the only (easy) sure way of knowing when you have hit a temperature.

If you have a regulator and a decent sized tank of gas so that the torch always has the same flame output you should just have to return to the previous settings and not have to tempilaqu proof the set up each session.

Update: Got my Tempilaq in

Ran a few test cases and decided to stop.

My Annealeez is not reliably spinning cases to the effect that I’m afraid I may be ruining brass by running it through the machine, regardless of the setting.

With the flame OFF, brass spins on the wheel as it should, 100% of the time.

With the flame ON, the brass does not turn more than maybe 90° in some instances, getting roasted on the side facing the flame, while the opposing side never see’s direct contact.

The wheel is clean & the brass is not dirty, no lube, etc.

I need a fix for this before putting more brass through.

Thanks, sent them a message on their website once I got the machine put away for the evening.

I’ve no doubt they will get me straightened out once the week gets started. ?

I received my Annealeez last week. Had the same problem. After cleaning the wheel with alcohol, it straightened up. But I’d still be interested to hear what they say about yours, because I can see it’s not the most reliable way of turning the brass.

That said, you should keep the brass you think you may have ruined. In one of the Annealeez videos, it says to keep scrap brass for setting the machine up each time you use it. That way you don’t have to test your setup on good brass. I’ve already seen that’s a valuable suggestion.

If I see any in which the flame washing off the case starts turning any color other than blue, it will get set aside.
Luckily that hasn’t happened yet.

Haven’t heard back from Mr. Buck. I’ll get some fine emery cloth on the way home from school today. If alcohol wipes and a good polishing/deburring on the little holder arm don’t situate things, I’ll glue some emery cloth on and see.

FWIW, with Tempilaq 750 inside the case neck, my setting of 38 (which I was originally concerned was TOO slow) was UNDER-annealing the necks. I wound up turning the flame up to be 1/4” off the neck/shoulder junction and left it at 38.
Tempilaq turned black inside the neck and get pulled out maybe half a second later. Tempilaq 750 on the body shows 750° doesn’t move down the body more that 1/4”.

I’m calling this setting good and just working on getting them to turn now.

?

Here's mine and the settings I ran, 750 tempilaq inside of the neck and the case rolled away as soon as it went clear, posted a video on annealers anonymous on FB and Jeff Buck said that was perfect and not to change a thing. I had zero issues with my unit.
