Apex .260 rem - 18.5" barrel
Driving snow/rain all day, so much for Saturday.
Sunday 10/09/11
Conditions - 41-44 deg - Dry/Overcast
Steady wind - 10-12 mph - Steady 11 - 1 clock for the most part [pretty good]
Altitude - 4800
Brass all rem but for a couple of nosler
All rds fired with .30 SRT Shadow TI [sweet]
All rds fired prone with Atlas bipod
Scope - NF 3.5x15 [be nice for a touch more power with this old eyes, but I do like the weight/size]
168 rds fired with 1 no go [primer? to be determined]
20 rds fired of factory Southwest 139 scenar
148 rds of my loads all being .020 off
Mix of - 139 scenar - 142 SMK - 140 VLD hunting MG
Powders were RL17 - 4831sc - 4350 [mostly the latter two, need to work with 17]
Random thoughts:
The bad
Initially trying to chamber and extract WITHOUT FIRING was VERY challenging if not impossible almost.
After about 40 or 50 rds at the bench it became better but inconsistent.
Obviously the tolerances are tight and after smoothing out the paint on the bolt/action in some areas was much better.
At the range- by the end of the day and some cleaning/oiling the feeding was perfection but extraction was still for the most not fun at all and very heavy! and not due to heavy loads.
I'm pretty sure that chamber needs a good cleaning and hopefully gets better with time and is just paint,
but any thoughts are welcomed.
The good
It shoots or has the potential for better than myself
I'm use to shooting .50bmg for the most part [driving it] I did better when I let this shoot itself
Magazine and latch fit/function could not be better, no play at all and smooth
Feeding was 100%
Due to time I worked loads at 100 yds for ease and use of chrony
Shot only 5 groups at 300 yd, not too shabby either I thought.
Older chrony but I think she is fairly accurate hopefully and it was good to have an overcast day.
Really don't care much for shooting "groups", so now I hope to extend/ stretch out a bit... find a few loads and have some fun!
Need to load up a little heavier on some and see what happens
Got a couple of smileys on the RL17 when pushing into the 2735 range
Could not be happier, just gotta get the extraction smoothed out!
Some numbers as I measure below with some pics if you click here - <span style="font-size: 14pt"><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #FF0000">
Apex</span></span> </span>Your mileage may/will vary of course
Copy and paste sucks, cant get my numbers chart to work. I'll update later maybe. Basically average velocity/extreme spread/group size
