Another silly question . . .

For better or worse, I sold my 7mm Rem Mag, and abandoned my plans to build it into a nice 500+ yard range toy. I built a SASS that seems to be filling that roll nicely.

Now, some criteria. The reason the SASS just won't do, is that with the bull barrel I've got hanging on, it's just too darned heavy for hunting.

<please, no comments about hitting the gym. I'm an old, married, computer geek. The gym is a luxury I don't always have time for>

So, I need a light weight hunting rifle. Ultra-light would be nice. I'm looking for something that can knock down an elk at a good distance away.

I've considered re-chambering a Savage 10 FCP McMillan to 300WSM, and chopping it's barrel back to 22 inches.

I've also considered a Kimber Montana in 300WSM.

What am I not considering in a factory (or slightly modified) ultralight hunting rifle?

BijouCreek has a great looking 300WSM, but it's so darned expensive.

Your advice, as always, is extremely valued!

I second the Tikka T3 option. They also make a "Lite" version but I am not sure how much lighter it is than the standard T3. They saell it in .300WSM which should be plenty for hunting. I don't know much about the range of the .338 Federal but they chamber the T3 in that as well as your more "standard" calibers. The T3 rifles are not "allowed" to leave the factory unless they shoot 1 MOA or less.
