It is a fact that smoking harms your health and others who are exposed to it.

I see nothing wrong with letting people smoke as long as its not around other people who don't want to be around it.

We cant shoot guns on public streets, its dangerous, just like smoking in public is dangerous to others.

Yes the government loves power grabs, which I am typically against. We have to be careful who we elect, because there is a fine line between rules that benefit the public and those rules that limit freedom.

Boone, I really don't think you're ever going to get it. I will grant you that you don't seem to have a lot of the habits that I hate in smokers (thanks for standing far away from the entryways to public places). The fact remains that cigarette smoke is harmful and irritating to those who have to breathe it in. It's not an instance of it affecting some people, it affects <span style="font-style: italic">everyone</span> who comes into contact with it. You expect those people to deal with it, because from your point of view it's a free country. Please try and use logic - why should the other person's freedoms be compromised by having to inhale smoke?

Tell me, would you be pretty pissed if I had a half dozen tires smoldering in the bed of my truck, pulled up next to you at a stoplight while your kids are in the truck with you? All that black, oily smoke filling the cab of your truck to make your kids cough and their eyes burn? That's how it feels to both my wife and me when we have to wade through cigarette smoke to go into a grocery store. It affects her more than me, and it usually takes her several minutes to breathe normally again. Why should we have to avoid public health hazards to buy our food?

You cannot present a logical, sound argument in favor of smoking. You can't. You can say it's about rights, but when you do that you're making non-smokers' rights invalid. The fact is, if something affects <span style="font-weight: bold">my</span> health, <span style="font-weight: bold">you</span> don't have the right to inflict it upon me.

Go ahead and bring up fat people again. I'm dropping fat because I want to live a healthy life. Obese people disgust me. They should have to pay higher rates on their health insurance (which some companies are putting into effect). I shouldn't have to pay for their bad decisions. You know what though? Their fat doesn't jump into my ass if I have to squeeze around them on their Jazzy in Wal-Mart. Your smoke makes its way into my lungs.

On topic, if anyone is stupid enough to think that an e-cigarette is a real cigarette and light up, they should be subject to the fines and penalties associated with smoking in that place. Cigarette smoke has a distinct smell and taste. Water vapor doesn't, and it evaporates pretty instantaneously. I would think that not seeing a stream of smoke coming from the end of a big black tube would be a dead giveaway that it's not a friggin' cigarette. Businesses can ban whatever they want to, but to have the government put a ban on using e-cigarettes in public without citing any health risks is not right. I don't agree with it. So many other things that are health risks are allowed, so there's no reason outside of someone getting po'd they're not getting tax dollars from e-cigs that there's a ban against them.

Let's be clear, and I'm sure you understand this, that my F**K the tobacco farmers was within the context of the discussion. As you point out there are many things that can be grown (and I'm a believer in the uses of hemp) instead of tobacco. My point was that the argument a tobacco farmer is going to lose their farm and go bankrupt because of the cessation of tobacco farming was BS. They can rotate a crop and not even see a loss. Heck, the government is paying some farmers NOT to grow crops.

So as long as it's readily accepted about the context of my statement we're GTG.

Yeah, I got that. I actually read context clues and that sort of thing. I can see where you stand on that issue, and I do agree with you on it. Too many people whine about not being able to do something they've done for years. Other people adapt and do something else. It's all a matter of mindset.

Here is an actual conversation my frend had at a restaurant back when a person could smoke inside.

Person in non-smoking section (person) Excuse me your cigarette is bothering me.
Friend: Well it is killing me.
Person: Well... (they said something do quiet I could not hear it.)
Me: That was the best answer to that I have ever heard.
Friend: I have been waiting years to say that. Years I am so happy I got to say that.

Personally I say BAN THEM, STOP ALL PRODUCTION, TRANSPORTATION, PROCESSING of Tabaco except for export.

I do not know about any of you. The way our Gov. is failing at their job(coddling the lazy) they could not figure out what to do with the loss of that much cash flow. Not to mention the total number of workers who would be put out of a job. I will put up with a little smoke. Eventually smoking will go away in large numbers but it will always be there. Same with illegal drugs. If someone wants them someone will have them to sell.


Lets get off of the fat people. What really pisses me off about what is going on with our food should make all of you sick. If you are bored lookup what they can put in food and not put on the label. Did you know silicone is one of them? As a former fat person it is hard to quite eating the good tasting food because all the chemicals have you addicted. What I did was switch to all organic foods and almost punched some skinny assholes who were running their sucks about some bull. I am skinny now and promptly tell other skinny people who run their sucks about fat people about how it really is and tell them to do something about it or Frack off.

Why outlaw anything, as long as it doesn't harm others? I know that 2nd hand smoke is not good for you, nor are alot of other things we have to breath everyday, as a byproduct of civilization. Should we outlaw everything that is not good for us, or are we able to discern, for ourselves? My Great Aunt smoked for 83 years(!) and had the lungs of a young woman when she passed @96. My Daddy passed from smoking @65 and had the heart of young man. Go figure..As for me I stay upwind.

This reallly boils down to this.....

Though I quit using it long ago, I absolutely support ones right to grow, transport,sell, and smoke tobacco. Or hemp. Or hops to make beer.

Conversely, I expect others to respect my right not to be subjected to their use of it. I dont come take a dump in yor yard, I dump in the dumpatorium. If im in a resturant I dont dump in the middle of the dining room , I go to the dumpatorium. It boils down to rights come with responsibilities. One of those responsibilities, in OUR society is to "treat (respect the rights of) others the way we would like to be treated.

Its not at all about tobacco. Its not about whether its good for you or not. Its not even fundamentally about rights, though thats a strong argueing point.

In a word its about-

I understand what you’re saying. I am able to see both sides of the issue. I don't believe we will ever be able to completely agree on the issue. My point is that banning or making things illegal is not the answer.

I will say this. As a smoker I have no problem with smoking sections. Establish smoking sections outside of businesses within city limits. If a smoker is caught smoking outside the designated zone write them a ticket. How's that.

BTW day 5 since I’ve had a smoke.

Congrats on 5 days, boone! Since several large cities have ordinances concerning chimneys, kitchen exhaust, and that sort of thing - I would even say that businesses should have a smoking room that's closed off from the rest of it and vent smoke via powerful fans. We used to have a smoking room here and I couldn't detect smoke outside the room. They had good fans and it was vented out the roof. I really don't care what people do to harm themselves, but when it affects me or the ones I love I have a problem. If there was a solution to isolate the issue and make it a non-issue, I think everyone would be happy. Well, not everyone; that's not gonna happen. But for the most part, people would be more satisfied. Cheers.

a long term study by british medical journal shows a lower occurance of Alzheimer's, prostate cancer and parkinson's in men who smoke.

men who smoke cigars show a minimal increased rate of mouth, throat, and lung cancer over non-smokers.

cigarette smokers don't fair as well as the cigar smokers.

I have been told to put out cigars in places where dozens fo people are smoking cigarettes. Asinine as it is (especially when it isn't posted) I had to comply with the wishes of the business owner.

I like cigars and pipes. In fact, I will smoke one tonight. But it has never been a compulsion or a craving, and I can (and often do) go weeks or months between cigars or pipes. So I am not opposed to tobacco use altogether, but I also don't think you have the "right" to smoke whenever and wherever you want.

I have little or no sympathy with people whose addiction drives them to stand in the rain or cold just to suck down a cancer stick. I prefer eating without the stifling smell of smoke wafting over me and my party. I enjoy being able to leave the bars without smelling like an ash tray. If, when I get home, I want to sit on the patio and have a cigar, that is my business, but I don't expect for every individual or establishment to accomodate me.

I can't help it, I have to chime in. I believe I hate cigarettes more than most people. One, cigarette smoke is nasty. I don't go to bars or anywhere that allow smoking inside because I come out smelling like an ash tray. Two, second hand smoke, while not as bad as smoking sure isn't good for you. Three, and the one that gets me the most, people throw their butts everywhere. I've picked them out of my flower beds after having a cookout many times. I had to pick up other people's cigarette butts all the time when I was a Private because I'm in the Army. That shit is infuriating especially when you watch the smokers throw their butts everywhere. Now that I'm not a private anymore, when my soldiers smoke during the duty day they smoke in the prone. Ya, know because smoking is a target indicator and if they're gonna go it they might as well have the lowest silhouette as possible while doing it.

I will say that I don't mind the electronic cigarettes that much because that's what my wife used to help her quit smoking. I tried to get her to quit forever and she never would until she got one of those. Now it doesnt smell like she just licked a monkeys ass when I kiss her.

If a person spends two hours in a room with constant secondhand smoke, it's equivalent to the person smoking four cigarettes. Go sit in a smokey bar for four hours, you've just about smoked yourself a half pack. But remember, the smokers will all tell you it doesn't affect you

It's extremely low. Lead is very heavy and will sink right to the floor. It doesn't "float around" like cigarette smoke.

Smoking is just stupid. Sometimes it's fun to do stupid things. I liken smoking to driving too fast. Mostly you'll get yourself killed but sometimes, by your actions and your choice, you harm others. Being willing to smoke around other people and thus impacting them because of your choice (such as smoking at the range, blowing smoke in the direction of others etc) - is simply an asshole thing to do.

It's not the worst thing to do however.

The absolute worst thing to do is fart in an elevator and not own it when the aroma hits everyones nostrils. That happened to me once, no one owned it and so I blamed it on this hot woman who once refused my advances. Revenge is a dish best served silent, violent and eggy.

Theres such a thing a GOOD starbucks?....I view them as a fall back when good coffee isnt available.......
