Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

Ha, that's what my smith and I were talking about today. Right now I'm looking at a six month wait. You think it's worth sitting around for? I was willing to wait it out since the the NF scope I'm ordering is on the same turnaround time.

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

If you want it go ahead and order it, try Bartlein as well, they're just as good and may be slightly quicker than 6 months.

Try Bruno Shooter Supply in AZ, they may have something in stock as they carry Krieger Barrels.

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

wnroscoe,
I was looking at a similar article the you replied to discussing the pro's and con's of .338 RUM and .338 Lapua. I've let my idea of having an Edge built dissolve because I'm not confident enough in my reloading skills to mess with a wildcat cartridge and from what I've researched most say the only draw between RUM and Lapua is better, longer lasting brass on the Lapua. My draw is that even is the Lapua brass is more expensive upright, the cost will be justified with the life expectancy of it. Any insight into this would be great. Oh, and I've also read that the Edge cartridge doesn't do well with a box magazine because of resizing it to fit. Any pointers with a box magazine setup, and the fit for a "CIP"? The setup I have is comprised of this:
Precision Extreme Titanium Receiver
32" Krieger 1 in 9 fluted tube with Heavy Palma contour
"Muscle Brake" 4 port
CG Extreme 2 stage trigger
Custom stock from my smith
Optics is a NF 5.5 by 25, but that's all preference.

My main concerns are justifying the round with performance and how I can reload over time. My smith is John Whidden with Whidden Gunworks in Nashville, GA

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

I have a good friend that built 2-338 Edges. One was sold and the second given to his son. Both shot extremely well but, magazine feeding is a PITA If the wrong reamer is used. .090" free bore is the ticket for mag feeding BTW. If I needed/wanted a large 338, I'd build the Lapua, no question about it.

I've often said that if lapua makes brass for it, build a rifle around it. The same holds true for the 338's.

Order a 1-9.25 or 1-9.3 twist and rock the 300's.

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

Thanks a lot. That's what it's looking like is going to happen. I've put some thought into the ballistics but everyone is saying go with the 300's. You have any data on the 300's? I know they'll handle wind better but with an average load (appx 90-95) what will I be looking at at 1500 plus yards? You loading Sierra's?

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

And don't mean to sound ignorant but I'm no smith or machinist. If you have a moment could you expound on what you mean about .90" free bore relating to the magazine?

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

.090" freebore is part of the reamer throat design that will dictate the COAL. There are two Edge prints and I'd have to look but, I beleive .090" freebore is the shortest one.

Install a Wyatts box and you'd be GTG.

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

Just purchased a Krieger 30 inch 1:7.5 .243 tube. I had high hopes that it would push a 115gr DTAC to 3100fps or so in a plain 243 Win. Well the fact is that it appears to be a dog with velocity so far. I am doing good to get 2900fps with stiff charges of H4350 and R-25. I can barely get 3000fps with 50grs of Retumbo behind a 105gr Amax. The accuracy is decent but I am jealous of velocities of lesser length achieve.

Just shows that this happens with all makes.

You might be able to contact them about this. The gunsmith I last used had a similar problem when 2 kriegers were bought and 2 identical rifles were built yet one was consistently 250 fps slower. He called and reported this and they sent him new tube to replace the slow one.

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

Krieger is used by some of the very best smiths, I'm looking into a few rifle and Krieger is most likely going on all them

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

I've heard that krieger has some of the sharpest lans in their tubes, any chance your rounds are coming apart or being marred before passing the muzzle? Be interested in seeing one that went into ballistic gel and could be saved

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

I wanted a Krieger for my current build but like everyone else says, the only down fall is the wait time. So I went with a Brux. I still might just order up a Krieger to have on hand for when the next build comes around.

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

Just ordered one today from Bruno's shooters supply. to dodge the 20 week wait. Never seen a bad barrel come from there, not even fluted ones.

Re: Any bad reviews for Krieger barrels?

Krieger is #1 but my last two builds have been Brux and both shoot great. The interrupted fluting Brux offers looks great.

+1 on Bruno's they are local for me and the 2 guys that run the store are both great to deal with. Helpful and they try to follow-up on with you on anything you have to wait for. Rare these days.

Good luck with your build!
