1- Colchicine = acts like a roadblock for the Gout. You take it when you first feel the attack coming.
2- Indomethacin = Is a anti-inflammatory. It helps with the pain associated with the attack. Best taken with food and/or milk.
3- Allopurinol = Helps your body rid itself of the main culprit, URIC ACID . Depending on how much acid you have in your system determines how much of this medication you need to take. This is determined by blood test given by your Doctor. It can also cause a flare up or make one WORSE. So if you've been taking Allopurinol and come under attack, DO NOT quit taking it. Maintain your current level along with Colchicine and Indomethacin.
(This is what my Rheumatologist told me. He said that I had been doing things wrong and that I had been somewhat mis-informed by my family DR.)
I am a GOUT veteran and I have been battling it for several years. Up until recently my success rate of keeping Gout at bay was hit or miss. I had another Gout Veteran with way more experience than myself tell me to go to a Rheumatologist and get that shit squared away because your Family Doctor aint cutting son.
So, the guy I was told to see is a retired Navy Doc with many years treating Arthritis (which Gout is a form of) that just tells you how it is and what you need to do. I like that. He don't beat around the bush.
I am up to taking one 300mg Allopurinol tablet every morning and things are "Quiet". I go back for a blood test next month.
So thats my experience. YMMV depending on your lifestyle and diet.
Get on top of this or you will be in for more frequent and painful visits by the GOUT. This stuff moves around too. I've had it in both feet, both knees, one elbow, one finger, but not all at one time.

So if this is the source of the problem, what can be done, through diet, or lifestyle change to avoid it before it starts. What organ processes this? Yuo may also want to consult a natureopathic doc...mabey there is a way to controll this which doesnt require the heavy duty drugs which no doubt take a toll on the body.
I watched my dad suffer with this. He was a miserable guy when it hit. Sorry to hear you young guys are dealing with it. Thought it was only for old folks.

Everybody makes Uric Acid. In some folks high Uric Acid / Gout is hereditary. Gout is the accumulation of Uric Acid crystals in one particular spot which causes the inflammation. Your body is either making too much, not getting rid of it effectively or a combination of both.
Diet changes can help but I think that the medication is the key to keeping things in check. As you well know, when your body ages, your metabolism changes and more often than not, it slows down. There lays part of the problem.
I tried controlling my Gout by adhering to a strict diet which seemed to work initially but soon proved futile due to flare ups still occurring.
If you were to use Google-Fu and look up
Uric Acid and/or
Gout , you would find a treasure trove of information explaining what's what and methods to control it.
