Any Steyr Aug Owners?

Everytime I see one of these I want to own it. Unique and well-designed always sits well with me. Downside, I'm a lefty so I'd want to get the left-eject bolt for it.

Anyone have any experience with these and can tell a novice what to look for? Seems like the original imports go for high dollar vs current models. Is there any difference other than collectibility?

I just ordered one for a customer. It was the first one I have ever touched and I have to say it was well made. It looked to be very high quality. If you want a shooter rather than a collector I would get a new one with the NATO stock to use pmags.

Accurate, rugged, reliable (short stroke piston), modular design, high quality are some of the AUG's strong points.

I have a pre-ban 20" A1 model that shoots like a match rifle. The trigger sucks, and they sell after market triggers that help.

If you get a preban AUG, if it doesn't have the closed flash hider, it most likely will not have the upgraded roller bolt carrier. I have one of the last AUG's built with open flash hider, but it's a factory transition model that came with the upgraded roller bolt carrier.

Watch out for some parts kit assembled rifles, make sure the serial number matches between the barrel, bolt carrier, and receiver.

Be cautious of non-Steyr AUG rifles as some of the parts and magazines are not compatable with the Steyr parts, or vice-versa.

The new Steyr AUG's (current production) have a last round bolt hold-open/release lever. The first ones were built in the USA under contract by Sabre Defense, and were on par with the original pre-ban AUG's as far as quality, etc. The latest production AUG's are built using VLTOR receivers, and FN-USA barrels, and I can't speak about their quality as I haven't handled or shot one yet.

All the Steyr (Austria or US mfg.) AUG's have 1x9 twist barrels, except for the 24" LMG barrel which is 1x7 twist.

They are awesome rifles, but some people can't deal with a bullpup design.

Great rifle, prefer to shoot it over an AR platform any day of the week. Our current service rifle is the F88 (Australian made).

I have an A3. I'm excited that several more barrel options should be available from http://www.pjs-steyraug.com/. I think he is supposed to have FN 24", 20", 18", 16", and 14.5" available soon. I think the 14.5" will be available with a permanent break. There is also rumor that he will have more affordable 9mm conversions available.

I have a Sabre Defence Steyr AUG, made in 2009, it is a 223 with a 1:9 barrel, I do not shoot it much anymore, due to almost all of my ammo is 556 now. There was talk that Steyr was going to give up with trying to make them here in the USA, but they worked something out with a group I cannot recall now. If you are working out of a vehicle, this rifle is just amazing. Wear gloves if you get one with the rail like mine, it is a knuckle buster racking when moving.

It is quite accurate, trigger is a bull pup trigger, it is amazing how neat the rifle is in working and take down.

The new ones are 5.56, they are using the same receivers from Sabre till they run out, then switching to their own again. I like the new flash hider, looks more like the Australian's to me.

I bought the AR Mag stock but took it off and put the Austrian one back on, it has a bolt release, and the mags are different so I won't mess up 5.56 with 224 ammo in the field.

+1 to black out in this rifle, that would be awesome.

My favorite optic for it, is the Trijicon ACOG, I did try it out with the Premiere and it was really amazing.

Yours is chambered for 5.56 eventhough it's marked .223 Rem. I called Steyr, and verified they are chambered for 5.56

MSAR STG E-4 is a great set-up, especially if you are in a state that doesn't permit SBR's.
They are also made in the U.S.A.!

It does take some time getting used to the fire-controls and trigger reset and bolt manipulation if you have been schooled on AR's.

However, if you are a lefty,the ejection port can quickly be switched to eject out of the left side (it is set up, ambi, and only covered with a rubber cover), and you can a get a Left-hand bolt from RatWorx, mentioned above.

RatWorx is the go to source for products and service on the Steyr or MSAR. Great friendly service and they make several after-market improvements including bolts, trigger packs and extended charging handles (which are an absolute 'must').

That is funny, cause I called them and they said it was NOT chambered for 5.56! They told me that later there will be a bolt and barrel kit for sale, but it was in the distant future.

I am interested in a MSAR. I did some research and now rethinking. My biggest hiccups are P mag compatible and the trigger. Is the trigger really a deal breaker?

Any input will be appreciated.

Dont own one but its our issued personnel weapon in 5.56mm. very rugged and reliable, used it in all kinds of crap ,muck, snow, desert sands, keeps functioning.only complaint is the sight we get issued as part of the housing group has a terrible reticule(basically a circle in the centre). we also have a housing group that has a picatany rail and we mounted S&B 3-12 pm11 on them and got savage accuracy out of them.
Triggers feel crappy but it shoots well. some of our barrels are marked 223 but the majority are marked 5.56mm

heres me in shity wet and mucky conditions, the rifle fired blanks and live rounds no prob after a week of this

Just picked mine up Friday am. Fit and finish is exelent. Fitted my liberty torch QD suppressor to it and that made it almost hearing safe, but still a little ring after a few mags, but not any louder than my ars suppressed. Going to mount my trijicon acog 150 on it this week, that should make it a nice little package. This is my first bullpup, and so far I realy like it, been raining so I haven't put it on a bench to see how she does there.

I had one for a while but mine didn't like black hills 77g OTM which is what I have in bulk, and I didn't particularly enjoy mag changes. Wouldn't advise someone against buying one but I would not pick up another one myself.

I used to have both a Green stocked pre-ban Aug, and a black stocked pre-ban Aug. I had the crosshair inside the circle reticle for the green stocked rifle.

Both rifles were superbly reliable, and plenty accurate enough. It always surprised me how you could actually dismount the entire barrel from the receiver, and the rifle would return to precisely the same zero as before dismounting the barrel.

That went against everything I had ever learned about parts returning to zero...usually they would be very close, but seldom went back to precisely the same zero. The Augs ALWAYS returned to precisely the same zero every time I dismounted the barrel. They was never a malfunction that could be attributed to the rifle. Any malfunction was traced back to ammunition, or magazine problems.

They are wonderful rifles, but I sold them both for two reasons:
1. I am just more comfortable with the ergonomics of Garand, M1A, Fn-FAL, M-16 style rifles.

2. The logistics of parts availability to repair or modify the rifles. With AR-15 style rifles, parts are available at almost any gun show, or large city. The Steyr Aug required special order, waiting, and usually much more money for the parts. Fortunately, neither of my Augs ever broke.

I've only had experiences with the MSAR. My friend owns one and it can't go trough a few rounds without a malfunction. I'm not sure if this accurately portrays the quality of most MSARs. If I were getting one, I'd spring for the real deal with a Steyr.

Well, I called them again, and a technician this time informed me that the 2 usa receivers are headspaced correctly for 5.56 so he said I am good to go. He said that 2 USA XXX receiver was used in a shoot they had and it performed better than the .223, also said you might see increased muzzle flash.

So, I'll try it out.

Wow, thanks for all the good info. I think I'm probably more interested in a pre-ban due to collectibility of it and less likelihood for it to lose value after I put 1000 rds through it. Compat with pmag would be nice, but not a deal breaker for me.
