Thank you. It isn't often someone who is being kind of a dick admits it so we can move on. As I said, your advice was pretty good but your frustration was cutting a wider path than I liked. There are a lot of shitty people in this world and as someone who's favorite part of construction is helping people to understand the process of building their dreams, it truly pains me to hear about your experience but it isn't that way for everyone. You are correct and I do apologize.
I was being a dick and was trying to be hyperbolic for Bear Pit entertainment purposes. In fairness, not everyone who worked on my home was bad, but the bad ones sure made an impression on me.
My nerves are still rather raw from the whole homebuilding process. It was not a rewarding experience, although my wife and I did set forth with the intention for it to be rewarding. I made a lot of mistakes even with all of the planning and thought we tried to put into absolutely every facet.....still things fell through the cracks. One of my major mistakes was being too trusting and lenient at the front of the build. I paid for that mistake for sure.
Every time I meet someone planning to build, I always try to give them tidbits to help them avoid the freaking mess I have lived for over 20 months (up to this point). I just wish the majority of the subs that worked on my house (again, not all of them were bad) would honor their word, treat everything as if it were their own, and endeavor to get things right the first time. The constant trips back to fix things that weren't right became tiring and, I'm sure, cost them a pile of money. It didn't really have to be so hard. Couple all of that to a builder who was....shall we say.....less than full of integrity, and I ended up with a witches brew of dung to sift through.
I need a drink. Ha Ha Ha.
Back before I was self employed I worked for a builder who also sub'd us out to other GC's. One of the GC's was a paper general (actually a realtor). He sucked to work for and his customers were sometimes unhappy too but overall he built nice homes because he hired good subs. Subs who cared and when left to their own devices in his absence(which happened a lot), worked well together and placed thier reputations on the final product not the generals. We cared. One year we did a Fall and Spring parade for him. Both were presold, both used all the same subs, same material providers, same inspectors, everything. The Spring couple had the time of their lives. The best experience and they couldn't wait to build another. The Fall couple went through hell. Even the weather was against them, nothing went right and this is with good people. I'm truly sorry your experience was so terrible. Hopefully someday when you retire or win the lottery you can use your construction (albeit building pole buildings and dentist offices, sorry had too) experience and GC one yourself. I bet you'd enjoy it and get a lot of satisfaction.
To the OP, I framed and trimmed myself and I was the GC. I did a few other things too, like hardwood, painting and tile. All as what now I would consider being a kid, what a moron. Some of that work would have probably been better left to an expert, like my hardwood floors. I saved 20-25% and that last part makes feel look back on myself as a pretty smart kid now.
