Rifle Scopes Anyone gone back to a non-christmas tree reticle?

Ebr7c, CCH, are my 2 current go-to. You don't need a tree, but it helps and makes things nice.

We don't need 6.5 creedmoors, we should just stick with 308wins. Same concept.

I've used an early version of the H59 since the early 2000's. Recently switched to a much simpler reticle and enjoy it much more.

I don't compete (yet) but I have a mix of both. I still like my SWFA Mil-Quad DMR and Leupold TMR reticles in my SFP optics, but I am really appreciating the benefits of FFP tree reticles with the Bushnell G3 and Athlon APLR3. They offer quick feedback without being too cluttered. I appreciate having a mix of both.

If you're always dialing for elevation and holding for wind it's a pretty foolproof reticle. 0.2 hash for wind. Has 5 mils of hold under, which can be useful for some (maybe a rifle where you switch between subsonic and supersonic you can easily get a 5 mil difference at 100 yards or maybe a really close hunting scenario).
It's simple and clean. Works well at low zoom, has the whole reticle illumination (some people don't like just having the middle crosshair or the opposite: having the full tree illuminated)
It would definitively be the reticle I would choose for a S&B ultrashort 5-20 but most on the used market have the P4L reticle which I don't like as much.

MSR2 is also pretty good for a non-tree reticle.

I mean it's personal preference at this point. Personally I almost never use my tree reticle. But sure if you have matches with stages where you can't use your turrets, yeah it's easier. Maybe if you're in combat with a DMR style gas gun engaging targets at different distances - yeah of course. For ELR where you run out of elevation and still want to get an extra 10 mils of elevation and for whatever reason also hold for wind ? maybe. Or maybe you're a Horus salesman and you're making a tactical uber ninja sniper tutorial telling your customers not to use those ridiculous elevation turrets because they're not accurate ?

Really depends what you do with your rifle but shooting 2-3 moa steels at 300-1000 yards ... don't really need a tree reticle for that and might as well get .2 mil wind hash instead of 0.5

I have not competed in long-range matches. But, I do have a real interest in hunting. Some of the game here in Arizona are very prone to being spooked. Little time can exist between the spotting of the game, and the shot. For these reasons, I have grown to like the "tree". I go to the range, and alternate between adjusting elevation and windage, as well as keeping it at zero, and utilizing the tree (being proficient with both is important). However, in the field, the tree is my greatest friend.

Yes, I like my March FML 1 reticles, P4 Fein and MSR reticles. My mind can’t stand Xmas tree reticles. Cheers.

No. But I am still running an SWFA 3-15x on my .22 for now, and if the chance pops up to get an old ERGO model USO with a GAP reticle, I’m jumping on it. Same for anything with an MSR reticle. If the price is right on either of those, I’m all over it. Those are classic, simple, uncluttered, easy to use reticles that I love!

"Simple" reticles certainly have their place.

My .308 for example has an MSR-K reticle on it. I'm not shooting PRS matches with it (though I would for fun), nor am I shooting really extended distances with my .308 where I would need to dial everything and then holdover (I have a .300NM for those type of distances).

The MSR-K reticle is a great reticle for generally duty where you don't find yourself having to holdover much. My wife's 6BRA has a MSR reticle as well (Steiner M5), and its a great scope/reticle for that purpose.

I don't think everything needs a christmas tree style reticle.

Exactly! I’m not a serious competitor, so I often go to matches just to have a good time and learn. I even shot a few local matches with an old ST10 w/ GAP reticle. Was I competitive? Not really, but the scope wasn’t what was holding me back at the time, LOL. I foolishly sold that scope and would LOVE to replace it. Because again, not everyone, or even every rifle, needs a Christmas tree reticle.

Depends what you are doing. Range / competiton use, then tree. Fudd-class uses straight duplex for the most part, as do many hunters.

Resale to competiton users, it really is useful to have tree, or at the bare minimum sub tensions on horiz/vert like a mildot or similar
