ive spent A LOT of time down there.
I have friends with lake houses down there. One has a place in Sunrise beach and the other in Osage Beach(south of 54 though so not on the "main channel" so to speak).
I have one friend that lives full time there, grew up there, etc... The live in Laurie and own Big Dicks Halfway Inn...
There are a few different "areas" of the lake where people congregate... the lake is big...100 miles from tip to tip(or there abouts).
Sunrise beach, Laurie, Osage Beach, Lake Ozark and Camdenton... Those are the main areas... Hundreds/thousands of miles of "lake roads" take you to many many houses on the water. A large portion of the lake is Corp property so no houses on the lake. This is generally the area on google maps labeled "lake of the ozarks state park"... thats where party cove is...
The area where "all the action is" is generally considered Osage Beach... Its the most centrally located area, but also crazy busy in the summer.
Driving around kind of sucks... lots of "you cant get there from here" type of things. Something might be 5 miles via water, but 50 miles via road.
You need a "bigger" boat if you are going to venture out on the main channel during the weekends...and you will want to do that. I would say 30' at a minimum. Certainly lots of people out there in smaller boats, but most people who "live" there full time have much larger boats. Most of the time when I am there we are either on some form of 36-40' go fast boat or a 36'+ cabin boat. MOST stuff is accessed via boat. Probably close to 100 restaurants/bars you can go to. dont like whats going on where you are, head somewhere else... Everywhere has "dock girls" to help tie up your boat...
