Range Report Applied Ballistics Mobile App

I'm pleased to announce that AB Mobile (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appliedballisticsllc.appliedballistics&hl=en) now has custom drag models for all 225+ bullets published in "Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting". Till now, the library of custom drag models only had about 10 of the most popular bullets.

What's this mean?

Custom drag modeling is most important for accurate trajectory prediction at long range where the bullet slows to transonic speed (below ~1340 fps). Above this speed, the G7 BC based predictions provide adequate resolution. However below 1340 fps, the actual drag of specific bullets can diverge from the G1 and even the G7 standard. More accurate fire solutions can be calculated with custom drag models. You can read more about this capability in the AB Mobile instructions: (http://appliedballisticsllc.com/AB_app.htm) and even more in 'Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting' (AB for Long Range Shooting).

The capability to model custom drag profiles is also provided in the new Kestrel with Applied Ballistics, now planned for production in mid May.

Sorry to say, no timeline yet for the iOS version of AB Mobile. It is planned, it will be done, it's just a matter of time; please bear with us.

Take care,
-Bryan

Program looks very good, so far, very similar to shooter.
A feature that would definitely make it different enough, is to have windage holds in the reticle view, apart from the holds for elevation. Sometimes in a shot there are variations in wind speed, having an idea of what range of values that represents in mills would be very useful for fast wind calls (eg. 1 mill is 3.5 mph wind, 2 mills is 6.9 mph wind, etc.)

Also, a scrolling wheel instead of the +/- for changing parameters in the hud view would be nice.

This^

Could you also include a danger space output (graph and/or table), and a way to compare the trajectory components (drop, drift, tof, and danger space) for multiple bullet/velocity combinations. This would be very helpful in determining the relative merits of different bullets, especially comparing light, low bc bullets at higher velocity to heavier, high bc bullets at lower velocity.

Hey Brian, I'm really enjoying playing with your Shooter app and haven't upgraded to the AB app yet. One question I've got, I have the Kestrel 4500NV which is paired to my Droid Razr via bluetooth. The Shooter App does receive and utilize the Density_Altitude information sent by the Kestrel, but I was surprised that Shooter ignores the Wind Velocity and Direction which is contained in the serial data you process. Its seems like it would be a very useful option to process the 1hz serial data available from the Kestrel and provide real time crosswind correction rather than having to manually enter it. I realize sometimes a manual estimate is desired and it would require an extra step to orient the Kestrel to the target, but the option of real time wind correction might be handy at times.

Bryan, been reading your book lately. Good stuff. If at all possible, i think that in the settings section, you should have a way to choose the output data in range card view. I know I personally sometimes would like to have mil and moa outputs and would rather not have to edit my optics selection to do so. Shooter used to have a similar function, but it went away in AB.

I downloaded this app for my new Android phone and it does not work. I tried to resolve the issue with the developer and after 2 emails back and forth he stopped responding. its been a COUPLE weeks now and the app isn't updated and I haven't received an email response back either. I'm sure the problem has to do with this being a phone that just came out a month ago(samsung S4), however now I'm stuck with a useless icon and out $30.

Sorry to hear that....But in the OP's defense - writing software ain't the easiest thing in the world when you're trying to make it work for all the devices that are currently on the market...not to mention the new ones that come out every 90 days or so.

If it's a software issue due to to the OS that your new phone runs on, then it's not exactly a quick fix. Sometimes there's a lot of re-coding and testing that needs done before an update can be pushed out...remember, if an update comes out that fixes the software on your phone, the update still must work on everyone else's "old" phone.

I'm sure it will get fixed...patience. I would like to have the software for iOS...hell, I've been waiting patiently a year. ;)

Yea... except that if the Author knows they can't keep up with oncoming versions of Android... You'd think he would then absolutely make the resources available to support IOS! Apps written for IOS have a MUCH MUCH larger chance of remaining in working order come new versions. Benefits of a closed system. They chose poorly and now seem to not understand they are getting to the go-home portion of Go Big or Go Home.

Too bad the author refuses to support IOS despite the demand! ... I don't get it because there are outside company's that JUMP at the chance to port apps from one to the other, $5,000 and 6 weeks and any college compsci major would do it!

Man that's a bummer about it not working it works on my s4 just fine

It gives you accurate results in your galaxy s4? Are you positive, I've tried a friend's s4 as well and didn't work either.

The program itself works.. It's just the results for some reason are waaaay off. I've confirmed with the developer that all my inputs are correct.... But for example for 2400 yards it tells me my drop Is 9 mills with a 338

Keep crying! specs really??? My iPhone is smoking fast I can't tell the difference only hacker types who should be on a computer not a phone can tell any difference. Look at the sales figures really look android vs iphone market share it's not debatable is it? Removable memory card so you can lose it lol. Just save the time and go IPhone if you don't want to be left behind . iPhone 5 comes out just before This Christmas and will take the entire market except for those that can't afford it which is understandable in this economy I don't fault that.

I am not an expert but my calculus tutor has a degree in engineering, programming and programming math. We were actually talking about ballistics math. From all the ballistics forumlas I saw in the books by Mr. Litz and others require shit load of integration and some derivation. Basically lots of curve math. That requires a stupid amount of brute ability to crunch numbers, whether they do it by integrals or by parts. The architecture of Android platform and most of the hardware itself lends itself well to brute number crunching compared to iPhone architecture.

I came to this thread specifically searching for an answer to this, I have the same problems with Shooter across multiple loads. Out to 300 the solutions are pretty spot on to what I got on my phones for the last 3ish years, which has been extremely accurate across all conditions, but beyond that is inaccurate. At 600 it's telling me I need 9 MOA EL, and then if I go back a screen and recalculate it says 7.6 or 7.7, and then those two alternate for each repetition. Similar scenarios with different numbers happen for diff cartridges/loads/conditions/etc. It's unnerving that the solution is different from the first iteration to the subsequent ones, as that can signify an uninitialized variable in a loop or memory allocation/access issues. I'm an amateur programmer at best, so I can only guess what the problem might be, but by judging those results I'd say it's pretty messed up, and is an OS disagreement as mentioned previously. I just got my S4 to replace the infinitely inferior Droid 4 (word to the wise, don't buy a Motorola phone if you're in the market), and the fact that I can't use the most useful thing on my phone, and the only thing I paid extra for, is disappointing. Hopefully more people will speak up and they'll expedite a fix, or someone on the android forums will figure out this difference on an unrelated app.

Latest update purports to fix trajectory errors, but the option menu in all screens and graphs are gone. (Nexus 4 running android 4.2.2)

Edit: 6-11-13 update pushed early this morning has resolved my issue.

waiting for iOS

Preach it brother!

.... Not sure what could possibly be taking so long. Hire it out! I know from experience it doesn't take nearly this long to do a server side app or an iPhone port of existing software. Developer is either working on something new, or sort of lazy. It's not like there is anything particularly crazy here, all the calaculations should be compiled as libraries, all that should need to be done is the IOS interface for those routines and DONE. Not sure what could be taking this long. You would think a confirmed source of income would be a desirable entity. SHUT UP AND TAKE OUR MONEY!

Just downloaded this app after watching bryan's DVD. Was all amped up and excited until I realized there are only a handful of reticles supported. : (

Is it a licensing issue or something? I am dying to know the likelihood of AB adding GAP and MLR reticles to the list. Aside from this letdown, I'm pretty excited to play with it tomorrow with my OBR.

lelandEOD,
We're actively working on adding reticles to the app. Please send me an email: [email protected] with the specific reticle you want and we'll add it to the list of requests.

Also,
The iOS version is currently in development and the timeline is estimated around 4-6 weeks. However, anyone familiar with software projects knows that timelines often get stretched so please don't hold us to the estimate. Just letting you know we're working on iOS and it will be available 'someday'.

Take care,

This thread has been going on for 16 months tomorrow, and in the begining (post 123 onwards) there was questions about a Kestrel with AB being put in it and it was said that would never happen, But alot of issues have not been resolved and Hey-Presto we have now a Kestrel with AB in it, Seems like those folks who had problems or needs with/from AB have been side stepped So The Kestrel Version can built, People paid for the right to use this app over a year ago and Seems like the people paid for the research and Kestrel got the Product, That Seems Fair !!!!!!, Nice.

?????
I am confused?
Did you buy rights to something? Did you purchase the program for another device?
I want the Iphone version but I didn't pay for anything.
What am I missing here?

There are alot of people who purchased this app with Issues that have not been resolved and No One buys the rights to it They Buy the Right to Use it that is two differant things, Those that bought it paid for the Android version from Google's Play Store, Also I dont understand why people have to pay extra to have items what are Standard on other Apps.
