Kirk,
Attempt to find out if DPMS has successfully corrected the gas leak problem with their 308 platform before you buy. Some of us (current and former LR308 owners) jammed them up pretty good on this issue because it was the customers that identified the source of the jamming being a gas leak. It IS something that DPMS is very willing to correct if the problem occurs, so don't discount them by my post...I do still have my DPMS A15, just gave up my LR308.
Symptom 1: Rounds will impact the lower receiver just below the feed ramps...DPMS claimed this was a magzine problem (specifically retention tabs) and that the issue has been corrected, but that suspect mags may still be out there (so send them in if it happens).
Symptom 2: The misfeed, failure to lock the bolt when empty, FTF (impact on the lower receiver), and flat out failure to strip a round out of the mag that is caused by "soft recoil" which was identified by myself and a few other DPMS board members as being linked to the gas leak. This gas leak would allow a shooter to successfully cycle ammo at the 180 grain weight or higher only, 168 grain match ammo and lighter would jam a lot (and at nearly $2 per on match ammo that gets expensive). Video clearly showed gas leaking from the gas block/front sight toward the muzzle...just enough to cause a "soft recoil" resulting in jams and such. I had originally verified that this was a gas problem by testing the magazine theory with mags from 3 different manufactures (DPMS, Rock River, and C Products)...all produced the exact same result: FTF (impact on the lower receiver), failure to strip, jam, failure to lock the bolt to the rear when empty.
I hate to see my fellow shooters spend that kind of scratch on a new rifle only to discover a problem and have it constantly go back to the factory. Their 308 platform with the 1 in 10 twist is quite accurate...had no trouble with accuracy even with a cheap 32x BSA scope on it.
If the problem has been corrected, the DPMS 308 is an excellent platform in my opinion.
