not sure if this or the auto rifle forum is where this question belongs-don't see a specific forum that is best. anyway, let's see if i can get a straight answer without any of the usual smartassed bullshit. like to know which flip up AR rear sight the members think is the best choice @ $100 or so. thanks.

Seriously, I'm a fan of the Troy because of the size, profile, aperture change, and the way it locks. There are several prominent companies that private label the Troy.

Re: AR flip up rear sight

I'd go with Troy.

I own the standard and tritium models, as well as the HK style fronts. Ive found open box/ mostly new as low as 75-80 each. They are as solid and reliable as I've come across. It's a backup sight in the end, meant to survive the fail of your primary so their robustness is ideal as far as I'm concerned (and slim profile). There's not much to them to not work (no springs, levers etc...) Plus, Troy CS is outstanding. I had a return (not malfunction) and was upgraded for free, they paid shipping to pick up and arranged carrier and next day aired the new package back.

I did a quick overview and comparison between their standard and tritium models, here's a link below if its helpful.

KAC Micro is the best IMHO but are pretty expensive; USMC marked ones are for sale cheap on eBay but are stolen military property.

Used Matechs can be had for pretty cheap but the latch that holds them folded wear out over time.

Both of the above have elevation adjustment.

Troy, MI, and Diamondhead are of similar construction, and are quality.

The Magpuls are quite good for the money.

People have an aversion to them because they are plastic but in fact they are more robust than aluminum BUIS; where the aluminum sights will bend and eventually break, the Magpuls flex then return to shape or at the least remain in one piece.

The second generation slimmer MBUS is a good value depending on what you're looking for. Like the A.R.M.S. models they lock in the down position and spring into place. I know they both have followings and testimonials about their functionality in poor environments and I'm not suggesting that they are more susceptible to error.

Mbus, Matech, MI, A.R.M.S., GG&G MAD, Diamond Head are all good flip sights. They're all fairly unique as well, so depending on your needs may suit you better. Everyone has their biases to which are superior in buid quality, design, functionality etc...

I do like other irons and appreciate their different qualities, but I choose Troy as a (save your life) backup sight. Others may be just as dependable but their simplicity and well thought out design for durability sold me for this purpose.

If you take notice of Troy's rear sight you'll see small differences that further enhance them as dedicated back up sights (they're are flip/folding sights that will function better for longer distances); adjustability is not exposed for quick manipulation. I like spring/latch release sights as well, I am just not convinced that it would actually save me time. I feel more comfortable with the sight locking in the upright position and just grabbing the entire piece myself. I know many have gone without a single issue but with my luck this configuration gives me the most confidence. Also, it can only be closed with the close/large aperture in the ready.

Again, I'm not not suggesting that any of the other options are inferior (in any way) it's just what works for me. For sporting purposes I would certainly consider others.

Here's the adjustment wheel on Troy's rear, notice how low profile it is, the protection around it etc... you can manipulate them by hand but they're designed to be adjusted with the tip of a bullet or a coin. The small textured part of the wheel that's exposed is facing down when not deployed, the rest is completely covered.

I think it's mostly a personal thing and dependent on its intended use. Everything that's been listed so far is quality as far as im concerned.

Edit: In the past 2? Years... Troy has improved/updated the finish on all their sights to be more durable as well. This includes the color options as well which I believe are now ceracoated opposed to duracoated if I remember correctly

Re: AR flip up rear sight

I've tried Troy, Magpul, and ARMS. All are slim enough to fit under the eyepieces of my AR scopes. Overall the Troy is the best of the three I've tried. It is the highest quality, it is well thought out, and it is the most slim.

One advantage of the ARMS is that you can replace the aperture part with a match aperture, which to me is helpful on any rifles to be used at distance. You can't do that with the Troy or the Magpul.

The Magpul's advantage is obviously price. Also if you are working on a lightweight build, the Magpul would contribute to weight reduction.

If you get Magpul it is important to buy from an authorized or trusted dealer. There is a licensed airsoft line that looks very similar but is made from cheaper materials and lower tolerances; I believe these are marked "PTS". There are also Chinese pirated knockoffs that are even worse quality than the licensed airsoft products; these can be marked in any manner.
