Need to get some mags for my aero m5 build and have seen a lot of discussion of the best options for maximum coal, does anyone know who makes the factory ruger sr762 mags and how long the coal would be in those? They're in the same price range as the asc and c products but I know those have a sketchy reputation. Anyone have the rugers?

The old C Products were terrible (anything pre-2015, might've gotten the year wrong, been a while). New owners bought the old company and changed the name slightly to C Products Defense (my opnion, big mistake, should've dropped the C Products from the name). They rebranded the new redesigned mags to Duramag fairly recently. Anything advertised as the Duramag brand is the new C Products Defense line.
The 308 mags you're interested in gets positive reviews. Honestly don't think I've ever seen a negative for the 308 mags.
The 5.56 mags (in either aluminum or stainless steel) that they advertise to work for 300blk doesn't really work for 300blk. They have overall positive reviews for both aluminum and stainless in 5.56 caliber however many people still remember the old C Product days so when it comes to aluminum 5.56 mags, most people say just spend the money on D&H, Brownells or Okay Industries. The stainless steel version of their 5.56 mags won't drop free out of many lowers but if you want stainless steel mags, they're the way to go.
Their AR-7.62x39 mag is considered the best AR-7.62x39 mag on the market.
OK gotcha, yeah I think I remember reading that they were excellent for 7.62x39 and maybe 6.5 grendel? I guess I wondered why they're not more popular for 308, they're dirt cheap and have as much length for reloaders as the $90 kac's. Seems like the best option for the money
I know you asked about cheaper mags, buuut I ended up trying out a KAC SR-25 magazine a few weeks ago. It's reliable and allows for around 2.850" COAL. They sting at around $90 a pop, but definitely worth it.

KAC and Lancer are the only SR-25 mags that have never given me trouble. The KAC’s are expensive but they are really damn good mags, you can occasionally find deals too. I’ve bought them on the classifieds here as low as $50 each brand new in the package.
I also run KAC mags with my Aero lower, and work the best for reliable feeding and a good COAL. PMAG SR25 variants also work but not as well as KAC. They're pricey, but if you're running a well-tuned large frame gas gun for competition, the magazines are a critical component and deserve just as much attention as the barrel, bolt, etc.
I'm not shooting competition but still want something reliable, looked at the pmags but the coal possible with them is pretty short. Seems like a lot of conflicting info on the duramags. It makes me wonder if some of the reputation of company owners is tainting people's opinions of the new ones, in which case I could give a shit less as long as the product is solid. I know over on arfcom they won't even talk about c products because the owner got banned off the site or something, they're like a cult over there. Who cares as long as the current product is good but it's hard to wade through everything and find out what's true. If ruger is using them for their oem mags that seems like a good sign

The M118 LR/SR PMAGs are great and my preferred because they work in every single build I've done but they may not be a good option for the OP whose looking for maximum COAL. Aluminum or stainless steel mags usually have the polymer mags beat in this regard. I've measured KAC SR25 mags circa 2011ish that were 2.885" to 2.890" COAL.I'm surprised no one has mentioned the M118 variant of the Pmags yet.

For polymer/steel hybrid the Lancer L7AWM had if I remember correctly 2.850" (was definitely longer than the M118 LR/SR) but my experience with the ones I purchased around 2016 has been negative. They work for plenty of people but didn't work for any of my 308 builds.
@Jimbo1 If you're not chasing lands as the throat erodes or trying to jam bullets, the M118 LR/SR PMAGs are a great cost effective choice. Every single barrel I've measured out with AMAX, ELD-M, ELD-X, GMX, SMK, TMK, GameKing from 168gr to 178gr had resulted in a COAL that never exceeded 2.820". Potentially negative - they are taller than 20rd mags.
So I'm building a 7mm-08. The bullet I've really been looking at is the 180gr eld-m, I ordered a custom barrel with a 8.5" twist just so I could try the super heavy, but yeah it's very long. Hornady has data at 2.800" that's already pretty impressive and the magpuls would be fine for that. Steel mags would leave more possibilities open for me though
