Are my expectations out of line?

Also don’t think you need a new chassis. I think that can be reworked just fine. I ended up doing the same to my AX chassis for the bighorn and it looks worse. Performs very well though which is what I care about.

I have split feelings on this. On one hand, I agree with you. Send me new skins and I'll take it to someone else to fix the frame and new skins to match.
On the other hand, I paid this company over $2,000 for the chassis, shipping and gunsmithing. I don't know that it's THAT irrational for me to ask for a replacement. I'm happy to send this one back to them (on their dime) and allow them to correct their work for another buyer down the road.
At the end of the day they could tell me to kick rocks. If I don't feel like the restitution is satisfactory I'll post the company/gunsmith to the forum, clean up the skin a bit myself and move on with life. I guess it's just a risk I'm willing to take.
I hear you Lenny. You and the others are right that it can be cleaned up (to a certain extent - you can't put material back), and function just fine.
I guess there is also a bit of principle at play here for me. I try to be reasonable with my expectations, which is the primary reason for this thread. I wasn't sure if I should just take it on the chin and move on with life or pursue some form of action.
We'll see how they reply and take it from there. If this is their quality of work and they stand behind it, then the community deserves to know that. If they decide to accommodate my requests, well then the community deserves to know that as well.

I would absolutely ask for a new chassis, or a refund to get a new chassis elsewhere. I think it is a matter of principle, even if the rifle shoots just fine. Assuming this is from a reputable shop, the OP has the right to assume a certain level of expert workmanship. That workmanship is clearly lacking here.
I buy custom rifles to get a perfectly executed implementation of my project vision. This is a very competitive industry, and there are too many other shops that will do this work to perfection to tolerate crap like that.

I don't think the OP is asking for too much. if they did give him a new chassis in exchange of his current one, he's going to have to pay someone else to redo the work that he should've gotten the first time. this is just the nature of the beast when you own a business. you accept the risk and it's in the smiths ethic to make it right. if he chooses not to, then that's dirty on his part. bottom line the OP PAID for a service/product and he feels that and it's also clear that it wasn't delivered in the condition anyone else on here would accept. period. no argument there.

I think what bothers me the most is that someone actually looked at that and said "this looks good, I'm finished. this customer is going to be happy" and boxed it up for shipment. that's piss poor in my opinion.

from My experiences most Long gun Builders/Smiths usually go the extra mile...and this looks like a armslist job gone bad. best of luck they fix this for you but i have to bet they will not send you a new chassis at most youll get a partial refund

I'll agree that I think your initial demand was a bit heavy-handed. IMO, if someone screws up, the best approach is to ask what they plan to do to make it right, and counter from there if you think it's unacceptable.

I figured this was going to go one of three ways.
- Someone would take charge and make this right (Ill be honest, I gave this a low chance of happening). Stick to your guns, because the conversation could be a total bullshit way of trying to de-escaluate but not really doing anything.
- Someone would 'understand your frustration' while blaming said shit work on Bob who is 97 and blind and then offering you a Blackhawk sling and Butler Creek scope caps for a scope size you dont own as 'compensation'
- You being lectured on how busy they are, they just moved their shop, you're harassing them, there's no way they did that and it had to have been you now trying to extort free shit out of them with your SH posting, and a mention of 'our lawyer'.

Tag for the response. If it was my shop I would attempt a Rework, if customer is still unsatisfied with Rework issue a refund.
Sounds positive thus far, I hope situation maintains current trajectory & they get you all fixed up. The unfortunate thing is (and OP seems level-headed enough to know this) that this owner probably had zero knowledge of this situation prior to getting an email from an unsatisfied customer... Guess that's when it sucks being the owner. Looks like he's poised to handle it well though.

They are sending me an overnight return label to ship the rifle back, will be giving me a new chassis in addition to the work required to fit the action, and refunding me the full costs of the chassis and services.

If/when everything is all said and done and you're happy, I think it's fair to name the company. IMO, any company can have a rifle slip through with an issue, and it's the way they handle it that makes all the difference. If they deliver as promised, I'd say they deserve praise for going above and beyond to make it right.

I think it’s fair to name them as this will probably boost their business. Ere is a reason people enjoy hearing about positive customer service experiences. The older I get the more I focus on customer service rather than the cheapest price I can get.

I totally respect your thought process / decision. If it were me, I would - after getting a functioning product - consider doing a separate positive post on your rifle and who did the work, leaving out all this. If / when they deliver, I would think they have earned a positive review and support.

Glad it worked out in your favor but i would wait to sing their praise until the rifle is back in hand and you have received what you originally expected.
It may have been just as simple of a mistake as putting it on the wrong rack in the shop, or something like that.
Or, maybe it was Friday when they worked on it. Did you get a shipping notice on Monday?

Op. Sorry to respond to this in your post. Carry on, wish you the best. But really the metal part of your Chassis is fine. Even if you go to court, especially if you do, full replacement, refund of work charges and freight would not be easy to get.

In my opinion this is exactly the company I WOULD want to do business with. At the end of the day mistakes happen, things squeak by even the best of the best, ultimately the service rendered AFTER a purchase is made, is the most telling aspect of a company. Kinda wish I who they were so i could give them some business on my next build. Glad it sounds like its being handled exactly as it should.
Op that’s way better than I have seen and been around this stuff along time. Frank remembers the days of of Tactical.net and crappy work done by many smiths.. Seldom does one get what you were offered. It might be nice to ask the owner if he would like his named mentioned.

I think they're being generous. I would have been happy if they'd cleaned up the plastic parts by hand and the metal parts in a mill. Maybe some compensation like some kind of free of charge accessory (better than Butler Creeks).
They're still going to have to do these modifications to another chassis before you're a happy customer, so it's not over yet. But if you do get everything the way you want it, this company deserves applause.
