ARE PROOF RIFLES WORTH THE MONEY ?

I'm looking at a PROOF TUNDRA or would i be better off going custom build ? i feel like PROOF rifles are high priced and know nothing about them i have their barrels on other rifles and love them just don't know if their rifles are worth $7,800 if anyone has experience with PROOF rifles please help me understand what you get for the high cost of the rifle

That’s 2,700 in a barreled action, leaving 5k for the stock and smithing fees? I’m sure map would be a better comparison than msrp but msrp is what’s posted and pretty expensive for what you can put together yourself for half that. Proof makes good stuff but not that good.

I have not personally seen/handled /shot one ... But the Springfield Waypoint seems like it would be very close to the Proof for less than a third of the price.

I can usually understand the high price of quality products ... AI comes to mind, and I am convinced they are worth every penny. ZCO is another example. However, I cannot come close to understanding the list price for a Proof rifle. Maybe I am missing something ...

Was just searching around and found that Tag firearms has a few Elevation MTR’s in stock for $3400, which seems downright reasonable.

Ive chambered and threaded ~15 or so Proof blanks. Theyre straight, the interior finish is nice, they cut well. Nothing but very good accuracy out of every one of them. Never had an issue with the prefits I've sold either. I’ll keep using them unless I start getting poor performance out of them.

There is a reason they sell prefits for $500 and they sit on the shelf meanwhile the actualy quality smith's are selling out at 750-850. Just becuase you never had an issue in your small sample size, doesn't mean there aren't, or you would even know. I have 2 with a 50% failure rate and 100% proof prefit failure rate. My sr15 shoots better groups than the proof.

You can piece together an amazing rifle for $4500 or so using the best of everything. Spending more is a complete waste of money.

I've had more than a few of the most respected Smiths in the country who say the same thing about proof and some refuse to even use their barrels due to their inability to control bore and land size. This is why I don't use local or random smiths or even some of the ones people here try and pimp. If you aren't indicating the barrel before cutting it with a proof, you are rolling the dice.

This guarantee is such a con on the count of if you claim it’s not, they will blame your shooting styles set up ammo anything they can to say it’s not their barrel. Having said that I have two proof barrels they both shoot good I have my Christiansen arms barrels that shoot better and I have a ton of carbon 6 barrels that imho are second to none. But as stated proof is kind of the put it on every shelf for a budget kind of deal. So you get what you pay for.

You could do a PVA prefit and save some $ and likely wait times.
Also might go with a Mesa Precision stock, save $ and wait times.

Im an old fat guy and I carry an 8.5 lb rifle all over the mtns.
8-10 miles a day sometimes. Piles of elevation.
With a pack.
And can shoot it sub MOA to 600 off that pack.


Have had good luck with Proof barrels, both prefits and AR.

I would take a custom impact/lone peak over ANY cadex, AI or MRAD up to 338LP sized cases.

More reliable, more accurate, cheaper to replace barrels and parts.

@Paton No proof rifles are not worth that cost. You can start with a Barreled Action Bighorn (or ARC)+ Chassis at aroun 2-2.5k and go All the way to an AT-X / Full Custom Action Build at 5k. Only an asshole would consider any of those options "subpar" Even a Tikka is a great starter rifle to build and mod. Tell anyone who says otherwise to fuck off and show you their evidence.

Spend your money on training, ammo and getting in the field.
