I wondered that as well when I saw it. I think it’s an RFID tag. The marine corps rejected using them over concerns it could be used as passive tracking of troop movements.
USMC rifle M40 no. 6257227 is documented by Peter Senich in his book The One-Round War on pg. 259. It was shipped to Sionics Inc. in December 1969, and is pictured with a threaded bbl & Sionics Model M14SS-1 suppressor.
The CMP auction rifle currently being discussed is no. 6257272. It has a short-action HS Precision M24 stock.

There is also a difference between the floorplates of the 2 contractors who built them. The 2-piece bottom metal variant has an elongated floorplate spring channel on the EuroOptic ASA M24 on the right side picture below. This allows the spring to seat farther forward. Not sure if that was the intended purpose. I cant feel any difference in pressure between the two. Both are still a bitch to load

During the later stages of rhe Vietnam War, USAMTU as part of a product improvement series, rifles were acquired from various branches of the Services and from Sionics Suppressor. AMTU also acquired a small number of 7 digit actions, obviously if this action was formerly used by the USMC as a M40, well price would be pretty substantial, some of the other 7 digit actions I have seen sold ranged from 4 to 8.
Not sure if this is the place to post something like this but I am trying to identify two parts on this rifle. First the stock and secondly the bridge. I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical Heavy barrel 308 that I would like to rig out similar to this rifle. Any help would be appreciated.

That auction was a sleeper. It has 2 UID trackers, and the weird RFID tracker. And the HS Precision stock has early issue annodized aluminum plates, not blackened. Maybe a Quantico benchmade predecessor to the M40A3...call it an XM40A2 prototype, or even a stop-gap M40A1 rebuild when McMillan HTG stocks weren't available?

So freaking close… Stock came in, of course textured and has that fat buttpad… is it hard to get a more correct looking pad ground to shape? But right otherwise.

Looks good! You can easily sand off that webbing and just paint it flat black.
Im thinking about it. I have a can of flat black alumahyde I might dump on it.
December 1988 U.S. Army Sniper School patch. This is an original (unofficial) issued moral patch being offered on eBay. The seller provides documentation on the history behind it. There are multiple clones available, but not the correct size or pattern, some even having period incorrect velcro. The original is shown with a ruler. Class of '88 had a lower number of passing students, 7 total graduates instead of normally 20, and that is why so many original unissued patches remain. This was early M24 era. Interesting that the Harris bipod is mounted backwards.

You won’t notice the difference. The flat black even shines up with hand oils the way the normal HS precision coating does. If you do sand it though make sure you sand with a sanding block or other hard surface backing the sandpaper. That will keep it from flexing and only hit the high spots.
Might want to check to see if the rail is contacting the barrel as well.
It does right where the side rails are. It floats until you reach the side rails then makes contact.

I realize I'm late to the party on easily getting an M24. I had a couple of questions for anyone that can help. First is regarding the receiver markings. I came across a rifle with shallow receiver markings that don't look like the clean receiver markings I remember from the M24 (attached photo). It's the best photo I have at the moment, but is that something to look into further if I want to buy this gun?
Second, typical newcomer question, what is the best and/or easiest way to get ahold of an M24? Money isn't an issue as long as it is a fair price. Should I post and hunt around for an older Remington release or just order through GAP?

That “M24” has some weird carbon barrel on it. Is that the one JFE USA is selling? I’d probably avoid that one.
Yeah I did some searching online and thought it sounded like BS. But the markings were odd as well.
I'm looking into an RR prefix M24 marked gun that is supposedly a police trade-in. Appears to be in great shape, but it doesn't have the iron sight bases. Looking into the RR prefix and police ones now
EDIT: as far as I can tell, RR prefixes were part of law enforcement sales as well as the reissue or commercial sale programs? This one I'm looking at is in very good shape with correct receiver markings and I believe all of the proof marks as well.

Looks like a legit Remington Defense or Remington Law Enforcement release. Double check it has their 5R 11.25" twist rate barrel, and you're gtg. One minor detail is the buttpad is the heavier commercial version of the HS Precision stock, so its probably stamped with "HS Precision" versus the "Remington" logo, but that wouldnt be a deal breaker to me. Let us know what you decide
