Where will you be hunting? I'll help you in anyway that I can. I guide about 75 Aoudad hunts a year so know a thing or two about them.

Re: Audad Hunting

Be up early and be ready to glass at first light. Also don't waste your time in the afternoon till shadows form. If your our before the shadows and you have no cloud cover your not doing anything but educating them. Keep your eyes high, glass hard, be patient and don't back track. Try to make your presence as low profile as possible.

Re: Audad Hunting

I've shot one. It was southwest of Sonora, TX. It was alone. I was deer hunting. It scored silver medal by the taxidermist. The shot was.....60 yds! It was eating some corn I dribbed down the road when I saw it. The thing was too heavy for me and guy who was an offensive tackle at Arkansas to drag very far.

At first I thought is was just a goat after all the stories I had heard about how hard they are to hunt. It seems I just got lucky.

Re: Audad Hunting

I have a small population of them on my family's ranch. We rarely ever see them and the few times we do try to harvest one, it is VERY difficult. Depending on the terrain where you're hunting them, I would recommend a long range rifle, an excellent pair of boots, and lots of patience.

Re: Audad Hunting

My brother and I heading to Marathon, TX in December for an Auodad or Mule Deer hunt. My question is: Do you guys think my 6.5x47 Lapua using the 130 grain Berger is enough gun for the mighty Auodad. My current load produces a little over 1000 ft lbs at 600 yards.

Or do I need to use my 338 Lapua?

Your 6.5 would get the job done, but limit your range. Odds are you will have some long range opportunities as well. Personally I would prefer more gun than the 6.5x47. Between your two choices I would go with the 338. Good luck on your hunt, be sure to take a good pair of binos.
