AW 26" w/break and folder, Cleaning rod length

After searchin a few other threads I'm gonna grab a lucas bore guide and was wondering if a 36" dewey rod is a good length for an AW 26" folder (.308). I read that you should get really long one for non folders. So again, Is 36" long enough or should I just grab the 44" one anyway. Still on my 10day wait period so just tryin to grab everything ahead of time so i can go break it in right when i finally get it

Re: AW 26" w/break and folder, Cleaning rod length

First to answer your question, I use a 36" cleaning rod and it works fine even for my non folding AIAW.

Second part, I never did any "break-in" with all of my three AIAWs. They all shoot sub MOA from the start. I find it a waste of time, money, ammo, solvent and everything else. But, that's just my opinion.

First time I clean it was after the first range trip. Must say, with my first AIAW, I cleaned it after every trip to the range for the first few months. After that, I got lazy and couldn't get to it. Didn't notice any change in accuracy even when I didn't clean it. So I decided to test it to see how often I have to clean it. It turned out that it stays sub MOA even after several hundreds rounds. So, with my subsequent AIAW and AIAWSM, I didn't bother with it until I see a drop in accuracy. For 308 caliber, I have gone over 500 rounds. For the 338LM, I have gone at least a couple hundred rounds. In fact, I can't remember that last time I clean it.

AI do their own guide that fits pretty tight.

I also used to clean mine after every trip but now leave it for 150ish before cleaning. Not a clue how long before it falls off but knowing my luck it would be right in the middle of a comp!

The folder will make cleaning it a doddle, it also fits in an AIM 40 bag folded like a glove

Re: AW 26" w/break and folder, Cleaning rod length

I have an AIAW 2.0 folder with 26" barrel/brake just like the one you just got and I had Mike Lucas make a bore guide for it to work with a 36" Dewey rod. Mike's bore/rod guides are made specifically for the AW action and have an o ring seal to seal the chamber. I already have a 36" Dewey rod and the standard 12 " length for Mike's bore guides was too long to work with a 36" rod. I asked him to shorten it to a total length of 10.125". The shortened guide works perfectly with the 36" Dewey rod. I only did that because I already had the 36" rod and none of my other rifles has such a long barrel.

If you don't want to go with a shortened bore guide, you'll need a 44" cleaning rod.

For what it's worth, I have not broken in a match barrel in years. I take them out and start shooting them and have not found there to be any difference in ease of cleaning or accuracy.

Bore guide specifically fitted for Accuracy international actions with chamber seal and its cheaper too. I have one and it slides in p***y tight.

The chamber fit is only half the equation. You also need a ROD guide---which the Sinclair lacks.
