BA .308 SA 1,000 yards?

Hey guy's quick question for you.

I am building my first long range rifle and wanted to get some feed back from the Pro's. I picked up a stock remington 700 sa that has an 18" tactical barrel.
Planning on dropping it into a Cadex chassis. Would a 26'" barrel get me to the 1,000 yard mark? Is there anything else besides the barrel and trigger I should change to push this gun as far a possible?

Currently not doing any competitions, but I would like to once I get this rifle where it needs to be to compete.
I have been reading a lot of mixed reviews when it comes to mags. Can anyone here vouch for the Magpul mags? I was leaning toward the AI mags, because it seems like they are fail proof. Definitely a price difference.

if Your going to rebarrel just get a 6.5cm, way better 1000yd caliber

My original goal was 6.5cm. I didn't know it was possible to convert a rem 700 to a 6.5cm

You did not know what a "step down" barrel was so that pretty much/almost rules out any significant amount of time around auto loading rifles.

all you have to do to convert is get a 6.5cm barrel everything else is the same.... for most folks 308 w 18in bbl is a good solid round for 800 yds for people who shoot moa targets instead of sides of barns

Nobody in this thread has mentioned anything in regards to distain for TH.

I have been on the range with TH a few different times over the past couple decades, I do not mind the guy in general, although I do know some of his marketing hype and equipment recommendations get out of hand with a few things;

Examples:
I watched the Rem MSR he hyped when it was in T&E get broken in 5 minutes upon taking it out the case at one of his mil courses at Ft McClellan.
I watched his OBR go down within 15 minutes of being handed to one of the mil guys at same course.
The ELR world watched as he hyped the crazy fast twist for the 16" barrel 308s fail...not due to the fast twist but due to the jacketed bullets because he wouldn't listen to the ELR guys that have been shooting super fast twists for decades tell him he needed to switch to monos in those 8 and 6 twist 308s. But there wasn't a mono maker willing to pay his fees for endorsement aka utilization of product.

BUT at the end of the day...he has a business to run and what/how he runs it is absolutely his decision. He has done good at the business side of the house no doubt!!!

The "disconnect" in regards to this thread for ME is 2 words: "Doable" and "Repeatable", along with the combination of some of your other posts.
Sorta like 2+2 not equaling 4, BUT I have been wrong before. lol

I didn't say someone in this thread had disdain for Hodnett, but I have seen it on the site.

I am not an accomplished shooter, nor highly knowledgable in LR, but I do have some experiences - one is shooting 308s at a mile. I have only shot beyond 100 twice, both times at a Hodnett class. I have 100 yards on my property. Boring to some, but that's what I have available.

I hit the plates often enough to call it repeatable. Several others in the class did as well. Its far from the best caliber for that distance, but it can be done

O yea, barrel life is quiet different.
IF I were to be completely honest with you....
Put a 20-24 inch (Doesn't really matter because you are not going to shoot the difference) 308 barrel on your M700, drop into the Cadex chassis and totally forget any distance beyond 600 yards for the life of that first barrel.
When that barrel is worn out, replace it with a 6.5CM barrel then repeat the process with 1k yards as max distance.
When that barrel is worn out, replace it with another 6.5CM barrel and then you will know enough about environmentals, ammunition, internal, external ballistics that you will not be wasting your money and time at trying anything further than 1K yards.
You will use that practice time to develop your support equipment that you want to use because once you get past 1500m...the support equipment matters as much as the actual rifle.

And that knowledge is what makes the 308 the great "learning" rifle.
By the time that barrel wears out YOU yourself will have enough trigger time to know why that round went were it did when you pulled the trigger. When things go from you knowing to you not being able to understand why that round went there instead of where you wanted it to go...pull the barrel
Unless you are trying to compete on National FTR level then I would say roughly 6k rounds of factory ammunition.

308 is repeatable at moa only to about 1200 yards hitting all around in a 5 foot area of a moa target at 1760 is not repeatable

Your barrel life will drop from about 4000-5000 with 308 down to 1500-2500 with 6.5 creedmoor depending on different things.

If you shoot 100 rounds a month, that's almost 2 years a Creedmoor barrel will hold solid precision before it begins to trail off.

Assuming 10 or 11.25 twist, load some 208 eld-m's long, and you should be right with the 6.5's in the wind at distance, even with your short barrel - but it will be a single shot. If you're set on re-barreling, definitely research other calibers/cartridges before deciding. In std bolt size, I'd be looking at a 7mm... 284, 280ai, 284 shehane.

Of course my 6.5 does it with less elevation required and bucks the wind better and can shoot out to a mile but the 308 is still very capable out to 1000 if you do your part and have trued dope, etc.

Just the other day I got a second round hit at 1185 yards with that rifle; now I am not sure that this is super repeatable but my point is that it will do the job out to 1000 for shooting steel with good dope and wind calls.

Details on the setup: Rem 700 SPS tactical chopped to 16", magpul hunter stock and DBM, timney 510 at 3.5lb, silencerco omega, Leupold MKIV 4.5-14x50 TMR Reticle FFP M5 turrets. Shooting 175 SMKs. Ballistics done with Kestrel 5700 elite.

Colemans Creek Training Center in Ellerbe NC, one of the best places to shoot long range on the east coast hands down!

Go with a 28" barrel in 308 you will get the speed use Burger 185 juggernauts or the burger 200.2 slugs use good brass alpha or Lapua use varget or shooters world you'll have no problems out to 1200 yd very repeatable a mile will be do able.

I could not for the bloody life of me hit the 1200 mark... it's as if the bullet just disappeared, haha. Worse, I could barely see the damn thing with all the mirage being picked up by the scope that far out but... whatever.

I suspect Federal ammo uses Sierra 168MK which are not recommend for 1000yd because of instability (I expect someone to respond that they can hit 10"gong at 1000yd with this bullet all day long)
