Barrel coolers

I have a few Chamber Chillers, and they seem to work pretty well. I think that the product that most folks are waiting for in this space is the MagnetoSpeed RifleKuhl (should be on the market soon).

I had a Chamber Chiller Beta 60, it was funky and the nozzle broke in my pack after a year, but it did what I bought it to do.

I saw magneetospeed was going to release one, and being a fan of their chronographs I looked to buy one, but I still don't see them available, and looking at proportions of it I'm skeptical how much air it would move.

I just received the new .308 Magwell Chamber Chiller that is powered by USB. While I really like the idea of putting the unit in a magazine, and plugging it into a USB pack, the new one still seems fragile and came with a noticeable, but so far inconsequential, crack in the case. Also there is no nozzle to really direct the airflow into the chamber like with the Beta 60. It seems like most of the air coming out hits the breech face of the bbl and exits out the ejection port before making it down the bbl. Air flow at the muzzle seems definitely weaker than with my last model, although I used my last model with a .308 bore and no brake, the new one is being used on a .260 bore with large brake, so going off of feel definitely isn't a scientific way of measuring it's effectiveness.

My biggest complaint is how tight the new magwell model is. I know it's only a matter of time before I snap something trying to jam this thing in and out of my chassis. I may try to sand some edges off it to ease it up, but I worry about weakening it. The new magwell model is designed to incorporate a yet to be released filter as well. Since I have no plan to use my chiller other than at a bench, I don't see a need for the filter.

I still really like the concept of having a chamber chiller, it's not a field expedient item I would take to a match with me. I purchased them only to minimize my time at the range doing load development. If I can cool my bbl faster between strings of fire at a bench, then I waste less time, especially during this time year when ambient temps are 30-50 at the range. I usually bring a IR thermometer with me to the range for load development and data collection to record bbl temps and make sure I'm shooting my strings at a more or less consistent bbl temp.

How big of a difference does it make? I's impossible to provide an objective measurement, but if I can keep my bbl temps at a relative constant, that's one less variable for me to consider when analyzing groups or chrono data. To me that's the value of it.

The RifleKule pushes more air than the ChamberChiller due to a higher RPM fan and better airflow path - and that is with the filter installed in the RK. Take the filter out, and it's a pretty drastic difference. The RK is also more compact and sturdier.

That RifleKuhl looks interesting. The size is what has my attention. You all might laugh, but for years I have been using cheap walmart portable air mattress inflator with some clear tubing. works great for my 300wm.

Shooting in AL at a match - 90+ deg and pretty quick rate of fire match. Nothing blistering fast... typ PRS style.

My friend had a chamber fan (don't remember fan brand just want to state facts) and we both were using suppressors. 26" barrels. Same caliber.

suppressors are heat traps. I would nvr shoot one again w/o a air fan period.

Going from stage to stage, his barrel would be warm to the touch, mine would still be too hot to touch. HUGE difference using the fan. Like burning hot to warm.

Highly recommend using.

That RifleKuhl looks really cool, can't believe I hadn't seen it until now. I usually do a pretty good job of keeping up of the new interesting things set to come out. I have a couple of the chamber chillers and have been pretty pleased for the most part, but I am hard on my gear so this riflekuhl looks like it might be harder to break so I will forsure get one. I pretty much shoot suppressed all the time and maybe its just my mind not wanting to think I wasted money but I seem to think there is a difference in between stages on a hot day if I'm using the chiller.

I usually run my trainer suppressed, and there's definitely a difference in how long it takes the can to cool down, not just the barrel.
