When it comes down to getting barrel bushings for a barrel vise which one is better aluminum or steel?

I have not seen anything using steel bushings, but I can very well be wrong. Typically a steel vice you can just use some rosin and tighten it down. A bushing style typically uses aluminum or wood bushings.

I only pull a barrel or two a year and mostly off factory sticks. I have a pretty good vise(not Brownells) and use aluminum bushings.
Some people say they are easier on the finish, but I usually have smears of aluminum on my barrels.

I hawe a badger m2008 action and i was wondering what is going to be easser on the barrel whille still giving me a good grip.I herd that wraping painters tape araund the barrel will keep it from marring the finish.any other advice.

I use a steel vise with aluminum bushings, they work great, as long as they are tight I have not had any marks left on the barrels. You can also wrap some newspaper around the barrel for insurance...

I use a few to pull my AI barrel off
Sometimes I have used an innertube. worked great
Also used Ronsin and duct tape (was kinda messy cleaning it up)

Lately I've just been using a hard wood block drilled 0.1 smaller than OD.

I have used the bushings that Brownell's sells and they are steel.
I do use a piece of leather between the bushing and the barrel.
I also find that if I heat the action to where it is warm to the touch ( I can hold the action in my hand and it is not hot and will not burn you) (on a 700 factory action) it seems to help break the bond of what ever type of thread lock the factory uses.

I use a Farrel vise (AL). Electrical tape or duct tape and rosin (and whoever said duct tape is messy was not kidding but it protected the barrel).

I use steel with rosin never marked a barrel yet. I have had barrels spin in aluminum and smear or mark the barrel.

I use aluminum and have never had a problem with it. If it does leave smears of aluminum on the barrel its really easy to get off. You could use steel but if it does spin its prob gonna leave some permanent marks.

I buy 6' lengths if 1.5" round Aluminum for ~ $60
I am on my second piece from making barrel bushings for the barrel vise.
