Best .308 for under $3500?

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

Love this question, I'll go make the popcorn ;-)

Seriously, or semi so, browse the classifieds on here & you can find some great deals on pre-loved rifles from great builders. APA, GAP, AI, etc. That, & or talk to the smiths directly about your wants & needs in a stick. "BEST" is definitely determined on your intended use(s) for said blaster.
Also, does the $3.5k figure include glass & accessories or no? Ditto on including a trainer in .22LR configured the same as your primary stick.

Your question's pretty broad, so you might want to fill in what you plan to be the rifle's primary use(s), & what features are must haves on it.

You could even simply pick up a new or used milspec 5r & use it until you sort out what make up the particulars & specifics of your dream rifle. They shoot pretty dang well, & if it's a .308 you're after, 8+ times out of 10 they'll more than suffice. Albeit perhaps with the custom stock of your choosing.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

Thanks for the reply. $3500 does not include the optics or accessories, and from myself browsing the classifieds and seeing all the options prompted me to ask this question.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

The Sako TRG is a great option around that range.

If you can swing another $500, I would look at the Desert Tactical Arms SRS.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

Borden Rifles will assemble your CSS kit, test it etc. the whole shebang for $2,200. This includes one of their repeater actions (I have one...like butter) a Hart of Krieger bbl and a Jewell or CG trigger.
So, with a Borden Tube Gun Action the bottom line is:
CSS KIT - $1,020
BORDEN Barreled action/trigger - $2,200
Total = $3,220 + S&H

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

For $3500 just buy a surgeon action and put whatever else you want on it.. make your dream come true slap a jewel and a Krieger on it with a manners T4 or a McMillan A5 with badger bottom metal. And then you have every mans dream rifle..thats should be close to cost.

I always look forward to VJJ's thoughts on these questions!

$3500 for rifle only will buy 95% of rifles at retail or used pricing -- pick one with a good factory/smith reputation thats purty to you.

FWIW I used to like it more but have since come to like custom builds more than my TRG.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

Lots of good advice coming in, all of it is very appreciated. Seems like the ones being repeatedly mentioned are the TRG, AIAE, or a custom built one.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

TRG is hard to beat. Start out with the standard 22 model. Then as you squirel away some money upgrade to the folding KRG stock. When you get tired of shooting 308 ( <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">IF</span></span> you ever get tired of shooting 308) you can rebarrel it to 260 Rem (or whatever 6mm/6.5mm is your hearts desire).

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

Go custom. Make it yours. GAP is a great choice with high retained value. The Borden tube gun idea sounds great if you like those. Didn't know that tey would do that.

+1. This is the way to go IMO

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

I have owned most of everyting out there and If I have not owned one personally I have spent some time behind it and I would not trade my TRG for any of them! This dosent mean I dont love em all it just means for me the TRG is the benchmark!

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

I'm with you NoGi, I'd pay even $500-$600 more to get a brand new GAP. Nothing against buying used, just for me to buy used I would need it to be around $3K or maybe even $2800, then I'd jump all over it. There's something about it being brand new and you being the first and only guy to pop her cherry. Just save another $500 and buy a GAP or else go get a TRG22.

....good buying.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

I have a TRG42, and I gotta admit, it is a helluva rifle as delivered. I'm a tinkerer, but I haven't touched the TRG, except to stick a scope on it. It shoots every load I've tried GREAT. It just frickin works, period.

Not to say the customs aren't great too, but a TRG will NOT be a mistake.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

The TRG all the way and something nobody mentions is that it has a great resale value, check and see what the used TRG's are going for. The used prices are high because there are't many out there, for the most part those that have one wont sell them, I wont sell mine!!!

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

My dream 308 would be:

Big Horn Action
Trigger of your pref (this action accepts any remington 700 trigger)
22" Benchmark barrel 1 in 10 twist (Heavy Varmit Contour)
Manners MCS-T or GAT
MCS DBM
USO Scope base
AADland Rings
3-17 USO Ergo

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

I have the Blaser lrs2 308, sako trg22, and an accurized rem700 in an AICS 1.5 chassis. The trg hands down wins it for me. It is lite like the Blaser, but with the rock solid feel of the 17 lb Remington. With that said, all three are great.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

"Best" is probably relative to the type of shooting you want to do with it.

If you want a factory rifle that you don't need to tweak at all, then Sako TRG-22 or AIAE.

If you want a very accurate rifle for practical match shooting under unpredictable adverse conditions with much lower risk of malfunctions, then Sako TRG-22 or AIAE (see here, for example: http://snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads....893#Post1824893)

If you're going to be doing bench shooting under good conditions, then one of the custom options might make sense for you.

Of course a lot of guys drag their custom rifles through the dirt and shoot in the snow and all of that without any issues, but probability-wise, in those conditions, something like a Sako TRG or anything from AI is a safer bet for reliability and yet maintains extremely good precision out of the box.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

Every time I go to the range with my GAP Crusader I walk away with a smile. I am truly amazed with it; everything about it.
Today I shot four .5 inch groups (5 shots each) at 200 yards.
My first group was clean cold bore, first shot dead center followed by 4 with a 3/8 inch group at 1 o'clock fromthe first shot.
My scope is a 3-15x50 and I have it zeroed at 100 yards. I dialed up .6 mil for the shots above.
I can't imagine what it would do in the hands of a better shooter.
This is my first and only custom rifle, but not sure how it could get better.

Re: Best .308 for under $3500?

I have had very good all round experiences with the AIAE mk2, but it depends on what kind of shooting you intend on doing, such as F class T/R or palma.
