Gunsmithing Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

Re: Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

These two books have some pretty good info IMHO.

* JOHN HINNANT: THE COMPLETE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO PRECISION RIFLE BARREL FITTING

* STEVE ACKER: THE GUNSMITH MACHINIST

Re: Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

Havent got the rifle fitting book yet, but its on the list. The gunsmithing machinist is a great book....I think. I am new at the machining side of things, but it is a great read and I think it is helpful.

Re: Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

Snipershide is the best book to read. Any questions you have will always be answered on here. You can read all the books you want but it wont be until you actually get into the thick of things that questions start coming to mind. No book will answer the questions that will confront you when you start thinkering with guns. Im a fulltime rifle builder and I even keep a close eye on things here especially little situations that guys get themselves into that may confront me someday. Your always learning. In this game you'll never really know it all but over time you'll find yourself with less and less questions to ask. Like most of the highly experience men on here you'll probably one day find yourself being able to answer questions rather than ask them.

Re: Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

Are you looking for basic gunsmith or machining? For barreling and action work those previously mentioned are great. Basic precision riflesmithing; scope mounting, bedding, trigger adjustment, ect. As mentioned read up here.
You're lucky. Being in Northern California one of the best gunsmith values is the Summer NRA classes at Lassen Community College in Susanville. They are highly recommended.

Re: Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

Don't know if it's still in print, but Wolf Publishing's book Gunsmithing Tips and Projects has useful stuff. Ignore the articles on flintlock stock carving. Or not.

+100 excellent book

Re: Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

NRA has a decent gunsmithing book.
Gun Digest illustrated books of firearm assembly are good.
Brownells gunsmith kinks are good.
Hatcher and many of the machinist books are over the top, unless your home has a 36" bed lathe with 1.5" throughput spindle and a complete set of Micro 100 tooling; I'm doubting that to be the case...

Roy Dunlap's book is almost timeless.
Stay away from Nonte's book on pistolsmithing.

The finest shop manuals are by Jerry Kuhnhausen.
Check out the books section at Brownells. Everything you want is there unless you own a Milling Machine and Lathe already.

good luck and have fun working on your guns...

Re: Best Book for Home Gunsmith?

"Accurizing the Factory Rifle" by McPherson(sp?). Basic homesmithing book. Gave me a lot of info on headspace, bedding, etc.

"Gunsmith Kinks" from Brownells. There are several editions of this and some of the information did not serve me. But it is an interesting read nonetheless.

I have never flicked a switch on a lathe, so the above books may be too basic for you, but I enjoyed them.

Thanks David, these are probably more my speed for now.

The hide def has more than enough info, but a book can be taken outside, on a train, in the bathroom etc
