Re: best powder for smk 175

Outs my three 5r rifles I've had they all did excellent with 44 grains of varget and 175smks. Start at 43 and work up.some have gone up to 45 with good results. Reloader15,h4895,4064, so on.check out the sierra manual for the whole list of powders.

Re: best powder for smk 175

I think I have the only .308 in the world that will not run ANY bullet weight with 4064. I have tried 168s, 175s and 190s with the suggested accuracy load and all have fallen short. . . way short.

RL 15 is making the magic happen.

Is that ball sand, stick type sand or a double base sand?

Re: best powder for smk 175

I've used RL15 and Varget in both of my rifles. RL15 id the way to go. Too much Varget hype going around. RL15 will get the job done. Btw... this powder likes the Fed 210M primers.

That's the double base powder.

Price on Alliant must be a local issue. Varget is higher than anything else in these parts.

Re: best powder for smk 175

In bulk Reloader powder is around 100 for a 5 pounder which makes it around 20 bucks a pound and the last Varget I bought was 148 for 8lbs which fiqures out to 16.

Varget is my favorite by the way but have almost equaly good luck with the RL-15 just hasn't seem to be a consistant as the varget. IMR 4064 also worked well as AA2520 case fill wasn't as good with the AA but works out real well with the 190 SMK's out of a 1/10. Here's what 41.2 and 41.3 of the AA did back in the fall at 175 yds out of a Savage 10FCP with a little tweaking to the rifle. Hard to tell but they are all 5 shot groups. Can't remember if Gunfighter14e2 was there when I shot them but our bud Ron was and ken has seen me shoot many of my loads.

These are 175's with 45 Varget in Winchester cases that I know both witnessed

Must be, Varget is about $20 a pound and all Alliant is $28-30 a pound.

Re: best powder for smk 175

My recipe:

Lapua match-prepped case
Fed 210M primer
Sierra 175 MK
43.5 grains N140
COAL 2.80 inches

Should get you about 2675 out of a 24/26 barrel

Re: best powder for smk 175

My 700 SPS-T likes:

Win brass
WLR primer
Sierra 175 SMK
45 grains of Varget
C.O.A.L. 2.815"

Produces 2610 FPS out of a 20" barrel.

I had plans of testing RL-15 & 4064 as well, but I had good enough results with my initial Varget loads that I'm just going to stick with it. YMMV

Re: best powder for smk 175

I use the Varget & RE15 as mentioned above. I also use Ramsshot TAC. 44.1 grains of TAC meters so easy that the last 100 I dropped did not have to trickle any. I just use a RCBS powder dropper.
As far as the Varget and RE15, 45grains of either is my load.

Re: best powder for smk 175

I thought when you bought a keg/jug of powder you saved money not so nowaday unless you order online, chain stores in my area are charging the same for eight one pounders vs a keg,my 175 loads run great with varget,h4895 RL17 ymmv
