Is setting a zero distance beyond 100 yards better for tactical matches and a dope chart and using hold overs rather than clicking. Mil/Mil scope with FFP and even at 20x there is over 5 mils showing on the crosshair that will get out to 850 yards with the loads used. It seems most targets are closer and with .5 Mil increments hold overs seem faster. Any thought would be helpful. Thanks.

Wouldn't recommend holdovers unless using a Horus reticle. Dialing your turrets will be more precise and consistent than trying to eyeball exact measurements on your reticle especially on the clock. A 100 yard zero is most common. What kind of scope are we talking about?

It's good to be able to do both dial and hold. Hold is faster but not as precise. Add some wind and the hold over gets a little tougher unless you have a reticle like the horus. Go shoot both ways on a MOA size target out to 600 yards, decide for yourself.

With a 100 yard zero you always dial up.

What he said. Going down to 25 yards? You will dial up. Going out to 800? You will dial up.

Stick with a 100 yard zero. Don't try and reinvent the wheel. Dial elevation when you can. Hold when you need to.
