I was a teen during that period. Had many friends who's brothers came home in a box. My sister was actually dating a guy who died there. She went to his funeral.

Also for your article earlier about violence in cities those articles are skewed as the smaller cities have no extra population to buffer the per capita numbers like the major cities do. Chicago has 2.7 million people which means that they saw over 27,000 violent crimes while some of they smaller cities didnt even break 1000.

However they have large areas of the city that have little to no crime to act as a buffer which the smaller cities do not. It’s the same reason that Vermont is always cited as being so awful in gun violence articles because they have some suicides but the low population makes it seem way worse than it is.

I don't know that you can attack it on only a poverty level. We have created a subculture that is many, many generations old by now. My point was more that his kids aren't likely to be in good shape because of an economic empowerment program or whatever, and certainly not because we start to tell him that his lifestyle is just another valid choice. His kids will do better by being the fuck away from him. It's one thing when you are talking about random dude X like your brother in law, and another when we come to realize that, mainly through our own policies, we have created communities that consist of way too high a level of this. I'm really not for taking peoples kids from them, but a lot of the really violent areas in the country need something that makes a clean break between what is happening now, and the kids that are not destined to be another generation of the same shit.
