So, I went to set up my blind today for some turkey hunting next week. Went to the same ole spot where the turkeys do the same ole thing....except this year.

Seems there is now a oil pump and storage battery where they have roosted for years. I walked the whole property howling and cawing and gobbling. Set down in a few spots and glassed pretty much the entire place. Didn't seem to bother the deer, but my birds are gone!

Went through the same thing on my and neighboring property this past year. Had a pipeline come through and they cleared a right away within a few yards of a roost that has been there for years. I still have turkeys around but they abandoned that roost.

The roost was in the tree line just above the cattle .

All in the name of progress.... Sad
I have an interstate project looming over good turkey hunting property.
About 5 years out. Hope they cant get it funded.

Pardon my stupidity, but is it possible to work to create a new habitat for them to replace the one that is to be lost? Perhaps then you could still have a good flock to hunt, and the highway could proceed.
I have been reading about deer habitats, and land use, and want to try to make a microcosm habitat on about 20-50 acres. I believe that it can be done over time, and I think the rewards of doing so might be very gratifying.
