Has anyone shot any of this or the old bthp stuff for that matter out of a bolt gun? Just wondering about accuracy and pressure.

Don't really want to reload for another caliber and would love to run this stuff. Seems like it would provide the best ballistics if it's accurate.

I don't think you will be disappointed in the downrange performance of the BH in a bolt gun.

A good shooting buddy just finished a trainer build and we did some load testing the past two weekends.

20" Hawk Hill 1 in 8" barrel chambered for 5.56NATO

His rifle absolutely LOVED the factory 77gr BH SMK load yielding 0.5MOA groups or better at ~2820fps

We worked up a cloned load using 77gr TMK's, LC brass, Varget and the bullet seated 0.020" off the lands, or way out there compared to mag length.

We found a node around 24.2-.4gr of Varget yielding good groups at ~2875fps but the pressure is getting up there.

The next load we are looking at is with the Hornady 75gr ELD-M's and Varget hoping to get around ~2925fps. Running the numbers the 75gr @2925fps beat the 77gr SMK and TMK's @2850fps in both drop and wind drift at 1k; 36" and 10" respectively.

I'm running the 73gr ELD-M (1 in 9" twist) @2900fps also over 24.2gr of Varget in a .223 Wylde chamber and seeing 0.5MOA or less.

The .223Rem / 5.56NATO loaded with the 73/75/77gr bullets is a VERY fun mid range cartridge to play with. :)

This is incouragjng. My goal is to not have to reload for it and use ammo that can be fed from the Accurate .223 mags. I'm thinking of trying the Wylde chamber and running the 69 TMK's. If I can get to 2950 in a 22" barrel it will rival my old 6.5 Creed 140 load inside 600.

I'm assuming you meant 2850fps as BH 69gr is listed as 2875fps.

If you've got a 1 in 8" twist I'd skip the 69gr and go for the 77gr unless you really want to practice your wind calls.

Another factory load to possibly consider is the Hornady Superformance 75gr load @2910:

No I meant 2950, but that's hopefully. I know their 69 load is rated at that, but pretty sure those numbers are from 18"-20" gas guns which are usually lower due to a little pressure bleed off from the gas system.

I would be happy with 1/2 Moa and anything over 2900 fps form the 69 TMK load. Pushing it to 2900-2950 should match or exceed the old 77 SMK mod 1 load.

Why specifically Black Hills? You have a large stock pile?

Because I've lost all time to reload and want to maximize projectile, BC, and velocity. Both loads are 5.56 pressure based and usually run a solid 50-150 fps faster then some other well know loads. Looking to obtain 1/2-3/4 minute accuracy consistently with the most velocity possible. The new TMK seems to have the highest of everything I'm looking for. Just curious due to the fact that I have never really seen it ran in bolt gun.
