I just got the wheeler scope leveler, and I put it on the action to see how it works. well according to the levels, the one that sits in the rails, the rifle is crooked. but the base says that the rifle is flat. so I took the action level out and put it on the base, then they both show level...

not sure why that's possible?

so how do I level this damn scope if I don't know which level I'm supposed to go with? I guess the base would be more accurate???

here are couple pics to explain better.

this is a Remington 700 LA btw...

Re: Bolt rails crooked?

I'm of the mind that the action rails are more accurate than the action/base interface. If the holes are not drilled exactly square, or the base is not exactly machined, this will show the error you see. I would use the action rails and the other level on the scope. Or, better yet, use the action level and a plumb bob to level the reticle.

+1 for the feeler gauges. Since you are using a one-piece rail, it's a no-brainer. I've read before where the bubble levels are unlevel from factory...especially the wheeler level-level-level.

LoneWolfUSMC made a video of bedding and mounting the base.

Check it out. You may need to bed.

Re: Bolt rails crooked?

It is not unusual to have the holes in the top of the receiver out of square. First the guide rails need to be level. Check the cross hairs with a plum bob, go back and check the rail with the level. If rail is still not level, the feeler gauge method will not help you, just yet. At this point to get the rail level you must bed it. Once you have done that, THEN you can go back and use the feeler gauges, plum bob, level or whatever to get your crosshairs plum with the bore axis.
