Bolt slide over Feeding issues

Having a problem with my new custom 22 creedmoor- deviance deviant action, rem 700 hinged bottom metal, manners stock, problem is random and not all the time, sometimes when I try to feed a round, the bolt will just slide over and not catch, appears to me that sometimes the cartridge rim will sag in the back and the front will slight be up so bolt doesn’t catch. I have a video of it, just wanted to see if there’s an easy fix before I call gunsmith tomorrow and have to drive it 3 hours to him. I have shot stock rem 700 my whole life and never had this issue. It's not defiance or Remington, it's the box you have in your BDL. Recommend you talk to the guy who assembled it for you

I just had this exact issue but with a dbm. The follower on the last round would get pushed slightly forward inside the mag box, causing the rear of the follower to get stuck and only the front of the round would raise. I filed a small bit of material off the follower where it was getting stuck now it’s good to go. Not sure if any help having a bdl but that was my experience

I will contact him tomorrow, Do you think it’s a problem with the inletting or bottom metal itself? It’s looks like there is a lot of play in the box when I move it around,like it’s not inletting deep enough.I was also thinking of just ordering a Hawkins BDL bottom metal kit and try that also.

Update, after playing around with the rifle I think I have it figured out, when I slide the spring all the towards the back of the hinged floor plate(towards the trigger guard) it feeds great for awhile, but as I load and run shells the follower spring is able to slide forward approximately 1/4” where it bottoms out. And then it won’t feed all the time. If move the follower spring forward it does it every time. Is there a different spring or a maybe a spacer to let the spring not move when loading and running bolt and probably moves on recoil also…

Can't view attachment. Sounds like it's the wrong spring and follower ? Please don't be a 223 trying to work in a 308 size BDL.

The follower and spring should be a good fit and not wiggle around much front to back.

My 250 Savage Rem 700 spring moves forward also, but it doesn't affect feeding.
You could add a small sliver of metal in the front side of the slot to prevent the spring from moving forward.

Also, you could pull the spring and follower out and compare it to one that feeds properly. Maybe the spring is slightly bent.


I have a 17 Rem that I converted from BDL to ADL and I had a hell of a time getting it to feed properly. Ended up that the mag box was too short (vertically) to fit the stock inletting.
Added some shim material below it and now it feeds fine.

Your problem is the spring. Too much upward pressure and tilting the wrong way will result in the round not seating against the action feed lips. Compress the spring to reduce upward pressure and increase pressure on the rear of the cartridge is where to start. New springs can need a lot of adjustment to run.

Assuming you have the correct box, spring and follower, adjusting spring pressure will get it running.

The box should wiggle up and down slightly. If it's not, you could have other issues. Put the spring in the right place, and stake it or put a glob of jb weld to act as a stop so the spring won't slide forward.

All the responses given have credibility in my experience. I ran into these issues before with BDL assemblies. Without inspection it could be a number of things. Number 1 culprit for me is always the feeding lip bend. I have bent springs and Devcin or JB weld springs to the floor plate to prevent shifting and also added material to the floorplate to prevent the mag box from shifting. Both helped, but ultimately it was the feed lips.

A competent builder should be able to adjust them or diagnose the issue if its not the feed lips. Best of luck. These issues suck.

Update, I put a piece of 1/2in brass flat stock in front of the spring on the floor plate so it couldn’t move forward, heel pressure is good now and feeds fine every time. Maybe creedmoor cases are picky I don’t know.
