boots ?????????????

Re: boots ?????????????

I just wear the boots i wear during the week, Tactical research Tr606 Kiowa. The fit great.

I think my next pair will be Danners, especially if I deploy to the AOR in multicam.

Re: boots ?????????????

I've always liked rocky boots. I had 2 pairs of 511 HRT's and they were sneaker comfortable, but fall apart super quickly. I'm sure my next pair will be danners as their quality is second to none.

Re: boots ?????????????

I love me some Danners!! If anyone has a size 9 foot I have a pair new in the box that needs a home.

That got Chiller salavating...I have to admit I did to.
I have a pair of Danner Yellowstone's that I have had for years and are still going strong but they would be much better in Multicam.

Re: boots ?????????????

I don't know if your in but swat boots are the best IMO they are light, tough, dry quickly and cheap if you get tan you can wear them in country or in the field. some units you can get away with them in the rear but its not worth it to risk it.

Re: boots ?????????????

In the Marines I wore Danners and blackhawks. Now I'm police, I wear Polished Rocky cap toe "Jump boots" in our blue patrol uniorm and blackhawks for SWAT.

Re: boots ?????????????

Use Superfeet. The heel cup gathers the fat of your heel for shock and control. The stabilizer is under your talus bone that actually supports all you body weight....not your arch, your arch does not and cannot support body weight. Stand on a Bannick device with full body weight measuring your foot length paying attention to how the foot changes shape. Now do the same thing with a Superfeet under your foot and see just how little your foot changes shape and grows in length. If you have the proper size, you will feel pressure under your foot at the talus bone area, yes it feels uncomfortable but this is why it works. Wear them a few hours at a time until you can wear them all day every day.

I like the orange capsule due to the pilot (bump) in the forefoot that helps deal with tired feet.

#1 boot is LaSportiva Nepal Ext Evo, no other boot compares but its off the charts for most users use and price but you asked. I wore this boot year round in Alaska.

#2 is LaSportiva Makalu, superb boot for hiking and packing and general off trail abuse.

Scarpa and Lowa are good too but both have odd fitting lasts. Asolo had some quality control issues when I tested them for a year. They just did not hold up well, stitching, rubbed holes around the fifth metatarsal, heel counter rubber through.

I am wearing 5.11 as my daily wear boots now and they are holding up very well. I have a year on them and showing no real signs of use but these are used in the city and light hiking around KY. Good forefoot volume, heel counter and low post. I do not like Danners due to their tall post and short heel counter, I have a pair but I do not wear them much.

Re: boots ?????????????

I wear Justin Original Work Boots(119.99) at you guessed it work(I fix Boeing 737's) they last 2-3 years, with these they must be comfortable right out of the box or break in is a bitch, for play cheapo Bates Ultralites(59.99 at Academy) there comfortable and wear well, give good ankle support, but I wouldn't choose them for full time wear because there are better choices but at a much higher price.

Not just length, but last and volume?

The Karakorum mod looks like a good boot depending on how it fits.

TIA

I am not very familiar with Hanwag but since they come from the German boot makers area, I would guess they fit similar to Lowa that are lower volume. Many of these handcrafted boots are made in the same region, sometime in the same village by different families and at times by the same families. If I remember correctly since its been quite awhile, Scarpa and Vasque share the same building. LaSportiva has its own and so on and so on.

When it comes to sizing, regions have some differences but most center around Italians. You can find some minor difference with Germans and French. They will all have smaller increments between sizing when compared to the US.

LaSportiva has two different hand crafted lasts; Makalu and Trango that has morphed into the Trango2 that is a higher volume now but still very flat and low volume. Yes I am biased somewhat with LaSportiva for obvious reasons but the Makalu is the best or most neutral last.

The Karakoram was originally the K2, I had a pair but for my use slightly too soft, like a tall Makalu. I would guess if the Hanwag fits you well you will find slightly more room in with LaSportiva but the arch maybe slightly shorter in length.

There is so much to a proper boot fit its near impossible to get it all on here. Toe length, arch length, toe box, foot volume is where, tall, flat, med arch, achillies notch with muscle length, your stride sup or pronate, and on and on.

Good luck

Re: boots ?????????????

If it involves rugged terrain, there will be a pair of La Sportiva's on my feet with GREEN Superfeet insoles.

Lhotse GTX when it's extremely cold
Glacier when it's not so cold
Trango EVO S when it's a class-III or tougher route

They tend to run small so I usually go up at least a half size from what I'd wear in most any other brand.

I thought they were an ad hoax until I tried them, they are not cushy arch supports that do nothing. Superfeet support bone, if you look at a skeleton, find the tib and where it meats bone in the foot, that is the talus bone and the plastic capsule of Superfeet go right under the talus bone to support your weight. The correct size will feel too short with pressure behind your arch and there is the rub, if you do not know or go to a shop that has no idea you will buy them too long with the pressure under your arch and yes they will not work. They are cut to fit to the length and width of your footwear.

Do the test I described above that will show you just how much they will shorten and control your foot. You do not need a Brannik device just bare foot on the floor.

You've spent so much time in the harsh Alaska environment with cold and WET conditions how do you suggest or what were your best methods for dealing with said conditions? I have a local store that is a LaSportiva dealer and tried on a pair of Makalus, need to get 'em. What is best way to deter water and then dry them out along with the best socks to dry out and maintain warmth?

They didnt stock them at clothing sales, or the IBX on base, so i had to order them through Belleville's website.

I ended up paying ~90 for them

Re: boots ?????????????

Garmont T8 Tactical Jungle. Best boot ive ever worn. except in the cold. not to cold friendly, but 50* and up, ill take them over anything else

Re: boots ?????????????

Quick one on Lowa. I have three pairs on the go: Upland Desert for the hot; Upland GTX for everyday and the the wet; and Creek II GTX for the wet and cold (warn with ventile/cotton gaiters).

Firstly they are featherweight. Secondly, like slippers. They can easily support a medium sized bergen, backpack, on the hillside (you can follow a goat) but they are not full mountain, expedition, stupid weight, on a cliff support, (nor can Matterhorn's/Danners which is what I used to use). What they are is perfect for all my shooting, trekking, tire kicking, climb a stupid hill, what the heck lifestyle. Should be good for 4 years good use (if you rotate them, take them off occasionally). Did I say they are my favorite shooting foot wear?

They do some darn good military black boots too; but now I'm out I don't wear black.

As for as boots, no real need for extra WP on the boots with LaSportiva leather. I prefer synthetic socks with some wool, best socks are Bridgedale, I prefer the Summit or Trekker. I carried 3 par, one of my feet, one drying and one dry. Lay damp socks on your chest under any clothes at night in the field. This will allow body heat to dry socks. 100% wool like Smartwool stay damp due to the wool. When I tested SW, they neve dried, stayed damp for the whole trip. Gaiters, even small ankletts will help keep external water and debris out.

As for as fitting, pull the footbed out of the Mak, lay it on the floor, place your foot wearing the socks you intend to wear with the boots with full body weight and you should have around an index fingers width between the end of your longest toe and the edge of the foot bed with your biggest foot. Cut and fit Superfeet.

Good luck

Re: boots ?????????????

Over the past 6-8 months I have been trying to find a couple pairs of boots to wear for work and the deer lease. I found a pair of Rocky S2V 400gram Goretex at Tactical gear now (AFMO.com)here locally for a super great price, lets just say it was under $100, but there was no box so they were probably returns but no wear shown. Anyway we had some cold here in TX for a few days and these boots were great. I have had them for about 5 months now and was wearing them daily until this last week it is getting too warm for them. The only problem I see with them is regular price is very high and would normally not spend $273 for them. They are great comfortable and buy another if the price was right. Forgot to mention that the sizing was about 1/2 larger I think due to the thinsulate and goretex linings.
My other pair is Tactical Research Khybar. I just got them yesterday but have been wearing them all I can. The same store above was running an in store sale on everything so I got these. I was looking at the OTB jungle lights but for my needs I think they fit the bill better. So far fit is true to size and feel just like a pair of tennis shoes. I have high hopes for these.
Rambling is done and I hope this helps someone.

Re: boots ?????????????

Asolo's are always good. I have the same pair from 2006. Multiple trips later they are still together. Had to shoe glue the front edges but nonetheless still waterproof and still fit great after all this time. Would recommend to use gators on operations as they are not full profile boots and debris can enter through them. They are much faster than full on mountainering boots. All depends on what your intent is. For everyday operations, still haven't found a pair of boots that'll beat them.

Re: boots ?????????????

I have a pair of SV2's ... Best boots that I have ever owned...

Have a pair of Danners (in the closet)

The SV2's have become my everyday shoes.
