Brookfield mount stuck dovetail

I'm trying to re-install my brookfield and the dovetail piece on the clipper strip guide area is stuck. This is an original so it doesn't have the screws to hold this piece in place, I though it was supposed to be loose but it's in there very tight. Is this expected? I didn't do the original install so I don't want to mess up this piece but would it be safe to hit it with a punch and hammer to knock it out of this groove?

In case anyone has the same problem this just took a small beating with a punch to get it loose and then i filed it down when i re-inserted it. hope this helps someone.

Typical of the originals. A tight press fit and sometimes peening was standard back in the 80s when the M25 program was growing up.
